Online Data Storage
Though hard drives, CD-R and tape backup are getting cheaper day by day, the need for online data storage is increasing. Online storage serves as an additional flexible source of data storage, provides a backup mechanism, and functions as an easy way to share data with others.

Although physical, local storage is inexpensive, online data storage is easy to expand. The fear from the ghost of space is no more extant. When you reach capacity, simply purchase additional space.

Both individuals and businesses find online storage mechanisms convenient. It can be used for simple tasks as sharing electronic photos. Also, if you are a small business, you can provide password protected access to business files to partners or customers. The user of online storage can have the chance to access data from any location that has internet access. With the availability of internet cafes worldwide, you can access your data from almost anywhere.

Backup is one of the greatest advantages of online storage. It is unfortunate that though people recommend regular backups it is rarely done. Normally if a backup is done the stored data is kept in the same place as the computer and there is still the risk of loosing the data in case of a disaster.

It is important to secure online storage services, in addition to be password protected. Some people prefer to add some additional security measurement by providing users with a password token, which generates a password that is used only once and then discarded. It can be accessed from any computer in the world, so long as you are able to authenticate into the system. Online data storage vendors normally have fully managed and secure solutions with 24x7 supports and monitoring. The facility itself should have its own redundant backup.

Online storage is of different levels. For non sensitive data, basic storage and access is adequate. Additional security is required if the stored data is sensitive, this can be. The data can remain private even though it is transmitted via the internet if strong encryption technologies are applied.

Live offsite data storage will provide real time backup for organizations processing heavy data. Transactions are posted simultaneously to your main computers, and the backup site. In case of lost files, it is easy to recover them. But in case of losing a big number of files, data storage operators will usually provide the option of shipping the data on CD to the customer. The need for offsite backup is recognized by disaster planning experts as a part of the disaster plan. Fires, floods or cyberattack can be disastrous to a corporation of any size if there is no redundancy strategy applied.
