Samsung Mobile Achieves Record Breaking Results

Published Nov 22, 2009
Samsung Electronics, a leading mobile phone and telecommunication equipment provider recently revealed outstanding global financial results for mobile phones in third quarter of 2009. Samsung Mobile registered operating profit of 869 million dollars; revenue reached 9.03 billion dollars with a 20.6 percent increase year-on-year. Samsung Mobile continued its outstanding performance for 2009, with sales increasing 15 percent quarter on-quarter to 60.2 million units shipped in the three month period.

Samsung’s global market share is estimated to have exceeded 20 percent for the first time, recording a projected 20.8 percent share after reaching 19.2 percent in the second quarter of 2009. While expenses for the quarter increased, globally, Samsung maintained its profit margin through sales of feature-rich touch screen handsets and other premium devices. Across the industry, average sales price declined 3 percent to 120 dollars quarter-on-quarter.

“Thanks to our strong mobile phone portfolio, we were able to achieve such record results. Our focus for mobile marketing in 2009 has been to enhance our premium leadership, to gain momentum in the full-touch, messaging phone market, while driving efficiency on marketing expenditure,” commented Sandeep Saihgal, General Manager, Mobile Phones, Samsung Gulf Electronics.

“Throughout 2009, we have been launching an advanced range of touch screen mobile phones to further reinforce our ‘Touch for Every Lifestyle’ strategy.” Saihgal continued, “this represents our new approach and commitment to come closer to end user consumers and provide exciting hands-on experiences.”
With the introduction of an advanced range of products such as Corby, Omnia II, Pixon 12 and I8910 HD, Samsung is aiming to continue with healthy growth and surpass its full year 2009 target of 200 million in mobile handset unit sales. This growth is being driven by increasing demand for multimedia, internet based applications and services such as Mobile Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, which enable the consumer to enjoy accessible and relevant mobile phone and internet browsing.

Saihgal added, “To further re-affirm our leadership, we need to offer a comprehensive range of handsets customised to our consumers’ needs and demands. We have noticed the unprecedented growth of online social networks; the number of people using their mobile phones to access social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace to keep in constant touch with their friends and families, has aggressively increased this year.”

To accommodate this need, Samsung has introduced advanced applications in flagship products like the Corby. The recently launched Corby boasts Pop-up SNS (Social Networking Service) notification feature whereby users can update their current status and access friends’ updates and live feeds via Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
