Thuraya Sets New Standards For Satellite Handhelds With “Thuraya XT”

Satellite communications is key to the livelihood of many people, especially those who are located in remote areas. Therefore it is vital that satellite phones are reliable and efficient at all times regardless of the users’ environment. The phone should be able to withstand the roughest of circumstances customers are exposed to because in many cases this is equated with safety. Thus a satellite phone needs to be functional at all times but a satellite phone can easily be dropped, smeared in dust, splashed with water and in many cases this affects the ability to use the phone.
To this end, when Thuraya Telecommunications Company launched Thuraya XT into the market, the Company had its customers and their austere environments in mind when designing the phone. As a result, Thuraya introduced the “world’s toughest satellite phone” as a means to ensure that customers have in their hand a gadget that they can use in the toughest of environments and still remains working. What this means is that Thuraya XT can be dropped, exposed to dust, splashed with water and it will still function perfectly.
When designing the phone for the satisfaction of customers, Thuraya threw the phone on the floor, sprayed it with water, placed it in a dust chamber and hit it with a hammer-like tool and in spite of all these conditions the phone remained fully functional. The Company also boasts that they drove over the phone with a Hummer and this did not stop the phone from working.
“Thuraya XT was designed to endure all environments that we know our customers can experience. The phone was rigorously tested to result in the Thuraya XT available in the market today,” said Mr. Alexander Lachner, Product Manager Voice Services.
“The innovative phone is the only satellite phone that complies with international industrial standard, IP54/IK03. These standards mean that Thuraya XT is splash water resistant, dust and shock proof,” added Mr. Lachner.
The outside casing of Thuraya XT is manufactured using the latest polycarbonates, has aluminium to shield the inside components as well as rubber seals on all plugs. These features make the phone durable in rough environments. Moreover, because most customers are based outdoors when using the phone, Thuraya XT has an advanced outdoor display making its glare-resistant. Through its internal brightness sensor, the phone has very good readability outdoors because of the low reflection in bright environments.
“Despite the ruggedness of Thuraya XT it has an extremely professional look and feel as well as an advanced user-friendly menu. The phone allows customers to access the internet, send and receive emails as well as send SMS messages and faxes. It also has an in-built GPS navigation feature. As a result not only is the phone tough, it is simple to use and reliable,” elaborated Mr. Lachner.
Thuraya XT weighs a mere 193 grams making it very compact and it has a battery life that is unavailable in other satellite phones. It has a talk time of up to 6 hours and a standby time of up to 80 hours.
“Thuraya XT’s battery life outperforms any other satellite phone and this feature adds to the phone’s efficiency,” concluded Mr. Lachner.
Thuraya is the world leader in mobile satellite handhelds and the launch of the world’s toughest satellite phone has boosted the Company’s position in the market. Since its launch several service providers have shown immense interest in the phone.
