Telecom Operators Meet To Enhance International Roaming In SAMENA Region Through “SIRG”

Published Dec 17, 2009

The SAMENA International Roaming Group (SIRG), a new group established by SAMENA Telecommunications Council, the multi-continent telecommunications consortium, had its first meeting in Dubai and in effect started its mandate of promoting best practices with respect to international roaming and support the growth of the telecommunications industry as a whole.

Comprised of leading telecommunications operators from across the 25 countries that make up the SAMENA region, SIRG is expected to lead efforts and initiatives that will enhance international roaming in the SAMENA region.

Some of the issues discussed by the SIRG included ethical practices in international roaming, improving the customer experience and cooperation with regulators and other governmental bodies.

SAMENA President Bocar A. BA said, “We believe that SAMENA International Roaming Group (SIRG) will contribute significantly to the collaboration among telecom operators in the region, who are encouraged to participate in the proposed group and share their expertise for the benefit of the regions’ telecommunications sector. SAMENA perceives an immediate need to address this issue by creating a dialogue among SAMENA members through its regulatory working group.”

In the same meeting, it was also agreed that a leadership team comprising Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary will be elected at the group’s next meeting by early February 2010.

Initial founding members of the SIRG include Avea (Turkey), du (UAE), Etisalat (UAE), Nawras (Oman), Omantel (Oman), Orange (Jordan), Orascom Telecom (Egypt), STC Group (Saudi Arabia) and Turk Telecom (Turkey). DLA Piper (UAE) and Devoteam (UAE) have been designated Observer-Advisors to the group.
“SAMENA’s primary goal for SIRG is to facilitate active collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst all the primary stakeholders in the industry with regard to international roaming, as stated in the key points from the meeting. SAMENA welcomes additional participation from other regional mobile operators in the greater SAMENA region and will be very proactive and progressive toward development of a consensus”, said Tom Wilson, CEO & Executive Managing Director of SAMENA.
