Demand For Motorola Wimax Fuels Wateen Telecom’s Subscriber Growth And Expansion

Published Dec 22, 2009

Building on its global WiMAX leadership position, Motorola Inc.’s (NYSE: MOT) Home & Networks Mobility business announced today that Wateen Telecom has accelerated its rollout of WiMAX services and is on its way to doubling its existing customer premises equipment (CPE) volume from 100,000 to 200,000 by year end. Motorola remains Wateen’s exclusive WiMAX CPE and infrastructure supplier, delivering reliable, easy-to-install, high performance devices to the Pakistani operator for nationwide distribution.

This latest agreement with Wateen builds on the success of Motorola’s recent announcement of shipping its one millionth WiMAX CPE. Tariq Malik, chief executive officer, Wateen Telecom, said, “We required leading WiMAX technology to provide first-class services and meet customer demand across an extended Pakistani network and after a competitive review selected Motorola to provide next-generation WiMAX CPE units. We are confident that the deployment of the CPE products will enhance Wateen’s position as a leading telecommunications provider.”

“Wateen Telecom’s ambitious expansion plans allow the company to reach a wider customer base and address popular demand,” said Ali Amer, vice president, Middle East, Africa and Pakistan, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. “It is a testament to the strength and breadth of our WiMAX CPE portfolio that Wateen continues to offer only Motorola devices to its customers across Pakistan."

“Motorola’s WiMAX solution supports Wateen’s growth plans by providing reliable, best-in-class performance with easy installation CPEs. Our operational costs have been greatly reduced because we require fewer base stations and can extend higher order modulation 40 percent farther within the service areas. These attributes translate into a faster return on investment, reduced churn and greater customer satisfaction,” added Amer.

As part of its latest CPE order, Wateen has chosen Motorola’s WiMAX USBw 100, which will be made available to consumers and businesses for the first time in Pakistan, and the outdoor WiMAX CPEo 450, as well as the newly introduced WiMAX CPEi 775 and CPEi 750 for indoor use within a home or office environment. Wateen’s services currently cover 22 cities in Pakistan, and the company recently reached a milestone of 100,000 subscribers.

The CPE units will provide a larger number of subscribers in Pakistan, from small businesses to large enterprises, with unprecedented access to flexible and affordable wireless data and voice services, from basic telephony and fast Internet access to secure data connectivity.
