Intel And Aviation Information Technology Soar In A New Direction

Published Dec 22, 2009

As part of Intel’s ongoing commitment to offer the best IT solutions to all sectors, AVIT today announced building 100% Intel technology- based IT infrastructure to be completed by 2011.

As the organization responsible for providing information and communication technology (ICT) services and solutions to Egyptian airports, airlines and government bodies, AVIT is dedicated to incorporating the best technologies into its offerings. With a bid to enhance performance and support from its IT infrastructure at a more compelling price, it migrated away from its legacy RISC architecture to one based on Intel® technologies. Testing Intel technologies on a number of its customer environments demonstrated significant performance improvements.

“We chose to work with Intel as part of our drive to deliver high-end IT services and solutions within the industry,” says Mohamed Dawoud, General Manager. “Migrating from RISC to Intel architecture has helped AVIT save at least 1.5 million Egyptian Pounds per year on operating system and software licenses, upgrades, support, and maintenance.”

AVIT carried out the ‘proof of concepts’ on servers running Intel® Xeon® processors 7300 and 5400 series. The company chose these technologies because on seeing their enhanced performance and reliability and on viewing that the roadmap for developing the next generation was solid. During the ‘PoCs’, engineers from Intel worked on-site with the AVIT IT team to identify the best way to optimize their wide range of software on the Intel technology-based platforms.

The areas assessed were the Egypt Air Maintenance and Engineering HR system and the EgyptAir airport booking, reservation and tracking system at Terminals One and Two of Cairo airport. Results of the test- run showed that:

- EgyptAir maintenance system runs up to 60% faster on Intel architecture than on RISC architecture, with scalability up- to 5000 users.

- Booking and reservation system for EgyptAir supports up to 90,000 concurrent users in testing.

“We are pleased to have AVIT onboard and are confident that our solutions will enable better service to customers,” said Intel Egypt Country Manager, Taha Khalifa. “New energy-efficient and optimized solutions are key to ensuring that our customers get the best out of our technology.”

Following the successful conclusion of all ‘PoCs’, AVIT has purchased more than 25 servers based on Intel® Xeon® processors 7300 series and Intel® Xeon® processors 5400 series to support its IT infrastructure. It has also committed to following Intel’s technology roadmap in the long term, integrating new technologies, such as the Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series and 7400 series. It has already stated this intention to clients such as the Ministry of Aviation.
