Published Dec 23, 2009

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a world leader in digital technology and innovation, hosted a roundtable discussion to recap the company’s 2009 activities in the Egyptian market and offer a sneak peek at what’s ahead for 2010. Presentations were given by Mr. Duke Park, General Manager of the Samsung Cairo Office, and Mr. Moustafa Aboul Fotouh, Head of Samsung’s Hand-Held Products (HHP) Division.

Mr. Duke Park began with a presentation about Samsung’s initiatives on a global scale including their commitment to research and development. In 2008, Samsung invested US$ 5.5 billion to secure the second most patents in the USA and generate US$17 billion in revenue from product patents and US$135 billion from specification and standardization patents. He also noted that Samsung is ranked 19th among global companies in 2009 and has been recognized by BusinessWeek as the fastest growing brand since 2002.

Mr. Park offered a breakdown of Samsung’s global network across 61 countries, 88 branch and liaison offices, 23 manufacturing subsidiaries, 42 sales subsidiaries, 7 manufacturing and sales subsidiary, 21 branch offices, 12 research and development centers, 2 distribution centers, and 5 design centers. He then illustrated Samsung’s position as a global leader in the electronics market, holding the top market share position worldwide in LCD TVs (21%), monitors (16%), LCD Panel TVs (27%), flash memory (32%), dynamic RAM (DRAM; 31%), and static RAM (SRAM; 28%). Samsung also has the second-best market share globally for A4 color laser multi-function printers (30%) and mobile phone handsets (17%).

“At Samsung, we recognize the vast potential of the Egyptian market where consumers are eager for the latest technology and have a sharp eye for stylish designs,” said Mr. Duke Park, General Manager, Samsung Cairo Office. “In 2010, we are planning to launch numerous products in various categories: mobile phones, cameras, home appliances and computers. We want to offer Egyptians the same selection of stylish and cutting-edge products that other countries enjoy.”

Mr. Park also reviewed Samsung’s dedication to corporate social responsibility activities around the world by highlighting some of their projects ranging from campaigns to fight childhood obesity in the UK to constructing local community centers in India to sponsoring youth education programs across Africa through the Samsung Real Dreams Program. He also outlined the ways in which Samsung is creating new value through comprehensive eco-innovation strategies which involve the “greening” of communities, management, products, processes and workplaces.

Mr. Moustafa Aboul Fetouh then offered a review of Samsung’s Egypt mobile phone activities in 2009 in its mission to further the company’s position as a technology leader and continue introducing industry best practices, technological innovation and skills development to the Egyptian market. In 2009, Samsung’s HHP Division achieved 62% growth over 2008 due largely to the wide range of products introduced to the local market, continued marketing support, service center growth and quality enhancement, and an innovative Samsung distribution channel strategy.

In mid-2009, Samsung introduced its unique Customer Service Plaza (CSP) concept to Egypt. The CSP service centers offer Samsung exclusive service through Samsung service providers to enhance the current service network.

Samsung is continuing the expansion throughout 2010 to create a comprehensive channel coverage plan to offer even more opportunities for consumers across Egypt to get the latest Samsung mobile phones. Currently, Samsung operates 15 service centers in Cairo/Giza, 4 in Alexandria and 9 additional centers across the Delta, Upper Egypt and Sinai regions.

It’s clear from our growth both worldwide and in Egypt that consumers are looking for innovative products that really enhance their lives, whether at work, at home or on the go,” said Mr. Moustafa Aboul Fotouh, Head of HHP, Samsung Cairo Office. “As a digital convergence leader we’ve proven our commitment in 2009 to regularly introducing unique and technologically-advanced products to Egyptian consumers, further showcasing the strength of the Samsung brand. We’re looking forward to continuing the trend in 2010 and beyond.”

Regarding plans for 2010, Samsung is committed to providing even more technologically-advanced products to the local market ranging from audio-visual to IT products. Additionally, the aim is to increase the brand awareness and strength as well as local product adoption.
