Oman Showcases eLearning

Published Jan 3, 2010
Muscat - Oman's Ministry of Education, along with Knowledge Horizon Training Centre, recently attended Online Educa Berlin 2009, the world's largest International eLearning Conference.

"With over 2,000 delegates from 92 countries and more than 400 speakers from 38 nations sharing their knowledge and experience, this was a formidable event," said Abeer Al Jasim, General Manager of Knowledge Horizon.

"It was aimed at the corporate, education and public sectors and the content was highly relevant to what's going on in eLearning here in Oman. Personally, I was extremely gratified to see that Oman is very much in line with the international community in terms of eLearning; we may be a young nation but we have a lot to offer in terms of technology and we should be very proud of that.

The Ministry of Education and Knowledge Horizon were among 104 exhibitors from 20 countries showcased at the exhibition which ran parallel to the conference. Indeed, the Ministry of Education was the only GCC government to be represented at the exhibition, highlighting the importance placed on technology in all aspects of life in Oman and the nation's rapid progress on the digital front.

"Our delegation was proud to be able to share Oman's eLearning initiatives with the rest of the world and were delighted to see that our offer more than held its own in the international context," added Al Jasim.

"Indeed, the stand that Knowledge Horizon and the Ministry of Education shared generated an enormous amount of interest. From a corporate perspective, our youth leadership programme, YouLeaP, which we've developed with Cambridge University, was a big hit. Several governments are keen to implement this system in their schools and we're actively pursuing dialogue with them.

The General Manager went on to explain that countries around the world are acknowledging the importance of developing, in their youth, an awareness of leadership potential and in so doing helping young people become more active and productive members of the community.

"We're very proud of YouLeaP," commented Al Jasim. "With technology at its core, the programme provides young people with a significant and meaningful learning experience that equips them with the skills they need to develop leadership abilities and in so doing enables them to meet the challenges and grasp the opportunities of an ever more interconnected world.

"We're grateful to the Ministry of Education for giving us this wonderful opportunity to share our eLearning offer with the international community," concluded Al Jasim.
