Published Jan 11, 2010

Nokia will offer $1 million in investment capital to team that creates best mobile service that raises standard of living in poor economies. Nokia is calling all innovators in the global technology community to take up their latest challenge which involves creating a mobile product or service that enhances lives of those in growth economies.

The Growth Economy Venture Challenge, part of Nokia's part of Nokia's global Calling All Innovators competition, was announced by CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo during his keynote address at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"We've seen what the tech community can do when it focuses on problems that are also opportunities", Kallasvuo stated. "We want to channel that energy toward improving lives in the developing world."

Nokia will provide a venture capital investment of $1 million to the team with the winning idea. The contest is open to anyone in the world with submission deadlines and all related information available through the CallingAllInnovators.com website.

In 2009, developers in the Middle East took part in the Bil3arabi contest for Arabic-language mobile applications. MEA services marketing manager Wendy Weckstrom stated that Nokia were "very excited to see the level of interest that this competition has generated..." and after judging the entries, $100,000 was awarded to Enpronomics - a geo-presence application that enables users to call for help in emergencies and share their location with family and friends.
