Samsung Electronics Signs Four-Year Agreement To Sponsor African Cup Of Nations Including ANGOLA 2010

Published Jan 17, 2010

Samsung announced the signing of a sponsorship agreement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), ANGOLA 2010 to be held in Angola from January 10 to 31, 2010.

Samsung’s sponsorship of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations is part of a four-year agreement with the CAF that will conclude in 2012. Founded in 1957, the Africa Cup of Nations is held every two years as the main international football competition on the continent and enjoys a tremendous following given the increasing success and popularity of football in Africa.

As part of its sponsorship efforts, Samsung will provide the CAF with electronics and telecommunications equipment to support the smooth operation of the tournament.

For Samsung, the agreement will offer a range of marketing and promotion opportunities including Samsung branding featured prominently at matches, the “Samsung Fair Player Award” presented after each match and at the end of the entire competition, product exhibitions, hospitality programs, and outdoor advertising.

“We are very proud to support one of the biggest sporting events in Africa. And through our sponsorship of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations, Samsung will connect with loyal and dedicated football fans, ensuring that the Samsung brand gains ongoing exposure and recognition in the African region," said Gyehyun Kwon, Vice President and Head of Worldwide Sports Marketing at Samsung. “Through these sponsorships, we’re able to communicate with our consumer in a meaningful way while sharing in the spectacle of sport.”

Mr. Issa Hayatou, President of the CAF, said: “We are very excited about our partnership with Samsung and look forward to encourage passion and support for fans, teams, players and upcoming players alike. This partnership with Samsung will further reinforce the exposure of the games and build our reputation as one of the world’s most exciting sporting regions.”

Samsung also sponsors the Chelsea football club of the English Premier League as well as many other sports events and teams around the world, including the Olympic Games as a Worldwide Partner. Football is one of Samsung’s main sports marketing platforms with the aim of bonding emotionally with some of the most dedicated and passionate fans among all sports. And with Africa’s emerging economy being one of Samsung’s top priority markets, sponsoring CAF and the Orange ACN is an ideal vehicle to reach the hearts and minds of African consumers in this increasingly influential market.

In particular, Samsung launched the “Samsung Next Hero Campaign” in Africa in 2008 to provide young African children a chance to realize their football potential and nurture their talent through strategic partnerships with NGOs, the media, and local soccer celebrities in Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria.

Samsung’s sponsorship of the Confederation of African Football includes:

- The African Youth Championships, RWANDA 2009.

- The 2010 African Qualifiers.

- The Orange Africa Cup of Nations, ANGOLA 2010.

- The Orange African Youth Championships, LIBYA 2011.

- The Orange Africa Cup of Nations, GABON and EQUATORIAL GUINEA 2012.
