World Mobile Revenues To Top $1 Trillion In Three Years

Published Jan 18, 2010
Informa predicts voice revenue will fall while data services will increase substantially by 2013.

Worldwide mobile service revenues will top $1 trillion in the next three years with data revenues driving profits, a new study by Informa Telecoms & Media predicts.

Despite a drop in voice revenues, Informa claims that growth in service revenues will be driven by data that will rise to over $330 billion in 2013.

That increase is substantial considering data revenues reached an estimated $208 billion in 2008.

"The backdrop to this transition in the industry is the fact that the internet has started to dominate the landscape for new services and applications, and telecoms operators are under increasing pressure to remain valuable and relevant in the eyes of their end-users," says Mark Newman, chief research officer at Informa Telecoms & Media.

"As this happens, the growth in data revenues is being spurred by the rise in take-up of more advanced technologies and mobile broadband services, as well as new handset interfaces and mobile content strategies based on application stores rather than walled gardens", Newman adds.

For all the talk of change, 2G mobile technologies still make up 90% of the world's subscriptions but Informa believes that this figure will fall to 70% by the end of 2012.

Towards the close of 2014, over half the world's 6.7 billion mobile subscriptions is expected to be for 3G and 3.5G+ technologies.
