U Box From R&M: New Platform For Cabling Systems

Published Jun 22, 2009
The Swiss cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari (R&M, www.rdm.com) has developed the U-Box, a universal platform for cabling systems.

The new installation box facilitates the quick installation of small distributors with consolidation points in raised floors for workplace accessing. The U-Box is also appropriate for hollow ceilings, cable trays and distribution cabinets, or it can be placed in wall ducts and office furniture.

Power, data and communications connections can be installed in a few steps. Interchangeable fronts on two opposite sides of the 57 mm high box accommodate the connection modules. Eight fronts formats are included in the component range. Up to 16 Cat. 6 jacks are accommodated in the 21 x 21 cm box (or eight data and four power connections simultaneously). Or two times ten RJ45 interfaces for telephone networks. In addition to the options for copper cabling with lateral cable entry, R&M offers a configuration for up to eight fiber optic connections. The same plastic housing resisting more than 200 kg tread load is used for every type of cabling.

The U-Box can be assembled without tools. The connection modules are snapped into the fronts. Spacers, mounting, separation and guide elements can easily be terminated and plugged in or out. A rotary knob locks the cover. The planning time is reduced because everything that is needed can be assembled like building blocks on site. Alternatively, R&M delivers pre-terminated boxes. The U-Box enlarges R&M’s Extended Office Cabling program (EOC) and can be combined with the R&Mfreenet cabling system.

It is small, black, easy to handle and extremely versatile. The Swiss cabling specialist Reichle & De-Massari facilitates the cabling system installation with a new installation box. The U-Box is a universal platform for workplace accessing and for the flexible distribution of data, communications and power networks. Greater efficiency for planners and installers, easy handling, high packing density and flexible application options for many media connections were the targets of the product development. The result is a cabling solution that is unique in the market. The modular principle makes installation as easy as building with Lego.

With the U-Box as a uniform base module, cabling projects can be implemented far more efficiently than before. Product selection and work preparation for horizontal cabling are reduced to a minimum. Only the location or consolidation point is planned and everything that is needed is assembled like building blocks on site. Modules for copper and fiber optic systems, connections for power, telecommunications, CATV and data networks are accommodated in the U-Box. The modules can be mounted and dismounted in a few steps. Installation takes place from above: insert the fronts, snap in the connection modules and the consolidation point is ready. The prescribed radii for copper cabling are complied with, even in lateral cable entries.

In addition, media connections can be combined in the fronts. Data and power connections can be placed close together yet clearly separated, for example, by accessing two workstations with one box in a multi-user concept. Spacers, strain relief, Velcro tapes and a transparent, standard-conform separation cover provide controlled guiding of the various cables inside the box. Fittings in sizes M20-25 stabilize the cables in the grommets.

The U-Box serves as a distributor for fiber optic cabling where large data volumes and more bandwidth are required. Up to eight SC bi-directional or SC-RJ connections can be accommodated in a front. With the breakout solution – for example in combination with R&M’s VARIOline – you can reach the depth of a building and the surface areas of an office floor. In fiber optic cabling, R&M recommends having the U-Box individually connector-ready pre-terminated to avoid time-consuming and complex fiber splicing on the construction site. Built-in radius limiters provide gentle fiber guiding in the U-Box.

The U-Box is specially designed for quick installation in raised floors, hollow ceilings and wall mounting – either as a multi-user connection or as a consolidation point. It is also appropriate for installation in backbones and distribution cabinets or for mounting in open cable trays. In home cabling, the box is recommended as a platform for voice distributors and small multimedia home networks. Thanks to its compact shape and neutral design it is also attractive as a wall-mounted solution. The U-Box is 57 mm high. Thus, it is particularly appropriate for low raised floors; such as are found in old buildings. Grounding of the box is not necessary as it is made of plastic – yet another advantage for efficient, cost-effective office cabling.

A rotary lock retains the cover. If necessary, it can be additionally secured with screws. There are snap-on connectors for the bottom to compensate for unevenness or to maintain a clearance from the floor to protect against water penetration. The same connectors serve as adapters in stacking and series connections of the U-Box or in outdoor mounting as holders.
