Q1 Sees 3.8m New Blackberry Users Globally

Research In Motion (RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, added about 3.8 million net new BlackBerry subscriber accounts in the first quarter of 2009 globally bringing the total subscriber base to 28.5 million.

Revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 was $3.42 billion (Dh12.5bn), comparable with $3.46bn in the previous quarter and up 53 per cent from $2.24bn in the same quarter of last year.

The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 81 per cent or devices, 13 per cent for service, two per cent for software and four per cent other revenue.

During the quarter, RIM shipped about 7.8 million devices.

"We are starting fiscal 2009 with strong financial performance and impressive market share gains, including a 55 per cent share of the US smartphone market according to IDC estimate," said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at RIM.

"The BlackBerry product portfolio is driving strong customer demand worldwide and our penetration of new market segments continues to expand.

We are excited about the strength of our product portfolio for 2010," he said.
