Skype Now Available On Nokia Smartphones

Published Mar 4, 2010

The popular internet telephony service Skype will now be accessible to Nokia smartphone users around the world through the Ovi Store.

Both firms jointly announced the release of ‘Skype for Symbian', a client for Nokia smartphones based on the Symbian platform that can be downloaded for free.

Symbian is the world's most popular smartphone platform with its code recently being made available to developers for free as part of Nokia's strategy to drive open innovation and stay competitive against other mobile platforms like Google Android and the Apple iPhone.

It's believed that more than 200 million Nokia smartphone users will now have access to Skype on the move according to Informa Telecoms and Media figures, allowing them to make free voice and video calls to other Skype users and call traditional landlines and mobile phones for nominal charges.

Skype for Symbian will run on any Nokia smartphone using Symbian 1, the latest version of the Symbian platform available on over 20 models so far including the N97, N97 mini, X6, 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia 5530, E72, E71, E90, E63, E66, E51, N96, N95, N95 8Gb, N85, N82, N81, N81 8 Gb, N79, N78, 6220 classic, 6210 Navigator and 5320.

Recently, Samsung released new high-definition television models that come with built-in Skype software, allowing customers to place video and voice calls through their television. It generated a lot of buzz locally by residents wondering if access to the Skype service would be restricted because of the UAE TRA's existing policies on VoIP.

Rouzbeh Pasha, head of Skype Middle East and Africa clarified to ITP.net that only access to the Skype.com site is restricted in the country but that the service was still being used through smartphones.

"Skype is a software application that is easy to download and use on various platforms. Increasingly technology is moving from hardware to software so consumers no longer want to use any application just on one device, they expect to take the application and experience with them. Hence Skype is focused on helping our 500 million plus customers experience Skype not only on computers but on mobile phones, TVs and so on," commented Pasha in light of recent developments.
