Published Mar 4, 2010

Orange Jordan, the sole integrated telecom operator in the Kingdom, announced the launch of its highly anticipated 3G+ network - the first network of its kind in the Kingdom.

The new network will preliminarily deliver services to select areas in Amman, Irbid and Zarqa and will gradually expand over the next six months to reach most populated areas in the Kingdom.

This announcement was made during a press conference held yesterday in Amman under the patronage of the Jordanian Minister of Information and Communication Technology MarwanJuma, acting CEO of Jordan's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Mamoun Balqar, Chairman of Jordan Telecom Group's Board Dr. Shabib Ammari, and Orange Jordan's CEO Nayla Khawam.

The conference was also attended by members of Jordan Telecom Group's Executive Committee. In his opening remarks, Juma emphasized that the launch of this network is an important milestone in Jordan's telecom revolution - one that will help reshape the socioeconomic and cultural landscapes in the Kingdom and will create new prospects for its ICT sector.

He expressed gratitude to Orange Jordan for taking the initiative to launch these services, underlining the company's rich track record of contributions to the Kingdom's telecommunications infrastructure.

In his keynote speech during the conference, Ammari explained that the launch of these services is a realization of the vision set by His Majesty King Abduallah II, which aims to make Jordan an active regional hub for advanced telecommunication technologies. The company's CEO Nayla Khawam reiterated Ammari's statement, explaining that:

"Orange had always sought to translate His Majesty's vision into reality. The services that will be delivered by Orange's 3G+ network will greatly bolster internet penetration in the Kingdom, which conforms to the national strategy that aims at increasing internet penetration by 50% in the Kingdom by 2011."

Khawam also added that, as part of Orange's commitment to utilizing the full scope of content-driven 3G+ services, the company has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the renowned Arab television network MBC, whereby several of the network's popular programs and series will be streamed exclusively through Orange's 3G+ network directly to subscribers' handsets. The service is the first of kind in the Kingdom.

CEO of Orange mobile Mrs. Majd Shweikeh delivered a presentation outlining the various offers through which subscribers will be able to enjoy Orange's 3G+ network, "We have created four offers, two for mobile and two for Internet. The mobile offers, grouped under the heading Your World Moves with You, consist of one postpaid and one prepaid offer. The Internet offers also offer postpaid and prepaid options and are part of Orange's Internet Everywhere package. Each offer comprises of several bundles tailored to meet varying consumer needs and incomes."

Khawam outlined the various phases in which the company intends to roll out 3G+ services in the Kingdom, indicating that the network will initially cover West Amman, Irbid and Zarqa, and will expand in April to reach the rest of the Capital. During summer of 2010, network coverage will have reached most urban locations in the Kingdom, delivering services to approximately 70% of populated areas, which translates to around 2 million people. She also outlined the basic requirements for accessing Orange's 3G+ services, which include 3G+ capable SIM cards (called USIM cards), 3G+ capable handsets and locating within 3G+ coverage areas.

Commenting on service fees and prices, she reassured subscribers that Orange does not intend to raise tariffs on essential voice calling and SMS services for subscribers migrating to the new 3G+ network. She explained that the new network will deliver a host of new services, such as video calling, mobile broadband, access to exclusive personalized and Live TV - all of which will be reasonably priced in accordance with regional standards. She emphasized that Orange intends to make it easy for both its current and prospective subscribers to try out and enjoy the wealth of advanced services delivered by its new network.

The conference also included an overview and a live demonstration of third generation (3G) mobile technologies, detailing the rich scope of services they make available.
