Microsoft Jordan held two events at Yarmouk University and the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) to honor students from both educational institutions who actively participated in Microsoft’s Live@Edu campaign, using the software company’s hosted suite of services to increase productivity and efficiency through online communication and collaboration.
Rula Ammuri, Microsoft Jordan Country Manager stated, “Live@Edu is a free suite of hosted Microsoft services and applications that work with the investments universities and students have already made in IT. The objective is to help students increase online communication and collaboration across campuses whether they are working on assignments and projects, exchanging and storing information, sharing documents, engaging in discussions or various other activities that will enhance and facilitate education.”
The Live@Edu suite includes various collaboration services and communications tools as well as mobile, desktop and web-based applications and storage capabilities. Some of the applications included are Office Live Workspace, Windows Live SkyDrive, Windows Live Spaces, Microsoft Outlook Live, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Alerts.
As a key aspect of Microsoft’s education solutions, Live@Edu is regularly updated with new features and services that enable local educational institutions to expand the IT services they can offer their students and faculty, in addition to increasing their ability to maintain and update systems and reduce costs.
Dr. Wajih Owais, President of JUST, stated, “We have created a digital campus where ICT is used for all administrative and educational purposes, allowing us to make informed decisions, while improving performance and enhancing productivity. The modern infrastructure that the University boasts also contributes to enhancing the creativity of students, encouraging communication and improving education and academic services, allowing us to achieve our ultimate goal of ensuring a high-quality education for every student.”
Dr. Omar Al-Jarrah, Assistant President, and Director of the Computer and Information Center at JUST, added, “Our participation in the Live@Edu campaign comes as part of our long-term partnership with Microsoft, where we encourage all university students to use their Live@Edu email accounts, which we believe is an important means of communication. JUST is one of the first universities to participate in this nationwide initiative and we are proud that our students have been actively using their accounts.”
By adopting Live@Edu, educational institutions are provided with a customized live domain name in addition to Microsoft Live IDs for each individual user that provides student, staff, professors and alumni with access to the latest Microsoft technologies and up to 25 GB of free online storage.
Dr. Sultan Abu Orabi, President of Yarmouk University, stated, “Since its establishment in 1976, Yarmouk University has been committed to remain up to par with international standards regarding e-content. We have focused a lot of our attention on continuous academic advancements and providing our students with the highest quality education. To that effect, the University boasts high-tech computer labs, over 3500 PCs and advanced ICT systems to serve every student and faculty member.”
Primarily addressing students’ needs, Live@Edu also helps staff, professors and other stakeholders working within education institutions, and also enables students and alumni to collaborate and create online communities that last long after graduation and throughout their lifetime.
Dr. Sameh Ghawanmeh, Director of the Computer and Information Center at Yarmouk University added, “The University partnered up with Microsoft to provide a Live@Edu email for students that they can use for as long as they please, even after they graduate. So far, the University has registered more than 42 thousand Live@Edu accounts, which also includes Yarmouk University graduates. The Computer and Information Center is working on ways to connect faculty members and students to ease communication between both parties.”
The events at Yarmouk University and JUST were the conclusion of a campaign that began in December 2009 and involved the selection at random of two students from each university who were awarded prizes for being active users of the Live@Edu services.
Nadine Haddad, Live@Edu Program Manager for North Africa, Eastern Mediterranean and Pakistan concluded by saying, “Live@Edu already has a considerable number of registered users in Jordan including current students, alumni, staff and faculty. The popularity of the service is due to the fact it provides so many means of enhancing communication and collaboration that increase productivity and efficiency, in addition to providing students with experience in using Microsoft products similar to those used in many workplaces, helping to prepare them for jobs after college.”
The Live@Edu campaign will now be expanded to cover 7 more universities across the Kingdom, with more students to be honored by the end of April 2010.
