R&M Signals Need For Airports To Upgrade Network Infrastructure As Passenger Traffic Takes Off

Published Mar 30, 2010

Reichle and De-Massari, (R&M, www.rdm.com), the Swiss structured cabling specialist signals the need for airport operators to upgrade current network infrastructures as air passenger traffic in Africa is set to rebound in 2010. Recovering from its drop last year, African passenger traffic is expected to rise by 5.5% in 2010, with countries such as Kenya and Nigeria witnessing increases of 15% and 17.7% respectively.

As airport operators cope with heightened passenger flow and security concerns, they must increasingly look to adopt solutions that maximize infrastructure performance and return on investment. This includes the deployment of a robust and reliable network infrastructure. R&M advises airport operators that the installation of high performance future proof cabling is the foundation for a network infrastructure capable of handling current and future airport traffic network needs. The Swiss cabling specialist also notes that a fail proof and secure network infrastructure is essential to safeguard against connection failures which result in data loss and potentially more material damage. Airport operations are particularly sensitive to connection failures, and thus require the highest levels of security for both passive and active components.

Jean Pierre Labry, Managing Director of R&M Middle East and Africa commented “Airport operators in Kenya and other important regional hubs such as Nigeria are under increasing pressure to serve growing passenger traffic with their current IT infrastructure. R&M advises upgrading to high performance cabling as an integral part of an airport’s reliable and secure network infrastructure.”

“R&M’s airport cabling product portfolio delivers optimal network performance coupled with scalability for future network demands. By deploying scalable solutions with forward looking designs and modularity, airport operators are able to extend the life of a key part of the infrastructure, and thus their IT budgets. Over time, savings are ongoing and significant,” added Labry.

R&M has been involved in a number of airport modernization projects to address increasing demand from airport operators to upgrade existing cabling infrastructure in response to anticipated growing passenger traffic. Recently R&M has completed several multi-phase network cabling installations at airport traffic hubs both worldwide and at the regional level, such as Paris, Geneva, Basel, Nuremberg, Seoul’s Incheon, Egypt’s Marsa Alam, and Sudan’s Khartoum International Airport.

The company’s extensive fiber and copper airport product portfolio incorporate innovative product features enabling heightened network performance while maintaining the highest security standards and ease of installation. To meet growing network security requirements, R&M offers a 3 level security system for its fiber and copper connectors. All components are Swiss engineered and compliant to next generation network transmission speeds and meet the latest OS2 standards; allowing airport operators to plan network expansions with ease.

R&M structured cabling solutions cater to the growing demand by organizations and enterprises to high speed uninterrupted access to information across their networks in a secure environment. The company is one of the region’s top three players in the network cabling sector in terms of market share, having completed several major network installations throughout the Middle East and Africa. The company has extensive domain experience in the health, petroleum, transportation, infrastructure, tourism, finance, industrial, and environmental sectors, and is represented internationally in over 30 countries.
