The Ministry of Education (MoE) of Palestine and Microsoft Corporation announced a partnership to deploy Microsoft’s free Live@Edu services across all K-12 public schools and educational institutions in Palestine. This comes as part of the efforts of both parties to enhance the education system in Palestine through the increased adoption and use of technology in schools.

Her Excellency Mrs. Lamis Al Alami, Minister of Education of Palestine, stated, “It is our responsibility to enhance the quality of education in Palestine by embedding ICT into public schools and educational institutions and supporting innovative teaching methods. Our main objective is to encourage public schools and educational institutions in Palestine to move towards a 21st century digital campus and we believe that this agreement with Microsoft will help us to achieve that objective. With Live@Edu students will have access to the latest Microsoft technologies that will enable them to not only increase their usage of IT in class projects, but will also help them develop the right skill sets for when they go to university and ultimately join the work force.”

Dr. Sabri Saidam, IT Affairs Advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas, stated, “It is vital that all public schools and educational institutions in Palestine adopt a more reliable way for teachers and students to communicate and collaborate through information technology, and we are committed to providing the digital resources necessary to see our students succeed. Microsoft’s Live@Edu hosted communication and collaboration services will benefit the schools and educational institutions in more ways than one especially with regards to minimizing IT costs and providing students with technologies that will help them stay up to date with the global digital lifestyle.”

By adopting Live@Edu at public schools and educational institutions, every student will have access to a variety of free services including email, online applications and storage, and the latest communications tools that include a customized live domain name in addition to Microsoft Live IDs for each individual user.

On behalf of Microsoft Corp., Rula Ammuri, Microsoft Jordan Country Manager stated, “Microsoft partnered with the Ministry of Education of Palestine to deploy Live@Edu - a suite of no-cost, innovative online communication tools - at all public schools and educational institutions in Palestine, as part of our efforts to extend the reach of high-quality education to every student, no matter where they are. Our objective behind this partnership is to meet the technology demands of the education sector in Palestine and to ensure all Palestinian students have easy access to the latest software technologies.”

Each student will be with provided a 10-gigabyte Microsoft Office Outlook Live inbox and 25 gigabytes of Windows Live SkyDrive online storage. Students will also be able to use other Live@Edu applications to collaborate on school projects in real-time virtual meetings over the Internet, and to access class materials, whether they are in or outside of school.

The Live@Edu suite includes a rich set of collaboration services and communications tools as well as mobile, desktop and web-based applications and storage capabilities. Some of the applications included are Office Live Workspace, Windows Live SkyDrive, Windows Live Spaces, Microsoft Outlook Live, Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Alerts.

As a key aspect of Microsoft’s education solutions, Live@Edu is regularly updated with new features and services that enable educational institutions to expand the IT services they can offer their students and teachers, in addition to increasing their ability to maintain and update systems and reduce costs.
