Recent Gartner Study: Symantec Identified As Largest Clustering Software Vendor

Published Apr 13, 2010

A recent study by Gartner found that the worldwide clustering software market size is estimated to be $1.2 billion for 2008; Symantec being the largest clustering software vendor growing 7.7% to $265 million in revenue during 2008. Symantec’s leadership position was attained as a result of its support in multiple operating system platforms, and capability to manage heterogeneous environments including Unix, Windows, Linux and ESX.

In-line with the recent growth of server virtualization, infrastructure virtualization and in the areas of end-to-end application availability, new opportunities for clustering are emerging. According to Gartner, most clustering software vendors in the market are hardware vendors who have innovated new clustering software to manage physical and virtual servers and workloads.

Gartner believe that it is important for vendors to clearly communicate their capabilities and plans for managing virtualized environments and clustering virtualized workloads as well as end-to-end application availability. The research, carried out in December 2009, analysed market activity during 2008, to help vendors understand the nature and competitive landscape of the clustering software market in order to position themselves correctly moving forward.
