Swiss cabling expert Reichle & De-Massari AG (R&M, www.rdm.com) has set an example for social, ethical and ecological responsibility. The internationally active company has issued a Corporate Social Responsibility Report (CSR) for the first time. The report describes R&M’s commitment to acting fairly, responsibly and in a sustainable manner. It provides information about objectives, values and consequences for management, employees, partners, customers and the environment. Moreover, R&M is reducing its CO2 output at its headquarters in Wetzikon by 30 percent this year. R&M has doubled the number of apprenticeships at its group headquarters in Switzerland since 2008. R&M wants to improve the health and satisfaction of its 600 employees and the force for innovation in the company.
CEO Martin Reichle: “Ever since the company was founded 46 years ago, we have conducted business in an exemplary manner with responsibility and foresight. With this CSR Report we want to document publicly our claim to sustainable action.” With its decision to issue a CSR Report, the independent family-owned company has put itself on the same level as listed corporations that regularly publicize their efforts to achieve sustainability. R&M is a pioneer in CSR in its industry.
As a quality leader in cabling technology, R&M plans far beyond the development, manufacturing and distribution of products. Its management approach focuses in equal turn on economics, ecology and social concerns. R&M aligns itself with the definition of sustainability issued by the Brundtland Commission in 1987 and conducts business accordingly. Martin Reichle: “The goal is to create a business operation that will benefit everyone.”
The environment will benefit when R&M moves into the new manufacturing and logistics center at headquarters Wetzikon – the R&M Cube. It is one of the largest and most advanced low-exergy business complexes in Switzerland. It operates without oil and natural gas as energy sources. The new building will reduce CO2 output by 30 percent over comparable buildings with a conventional energy and heating supply. R&M recently optimized its worldwide logistics. For instance, goods only have to be delivered once a week. That saves a large number of truck runs.
In its CSR Report, R&M commits itself to personnel management based on sustainable values with an emphasis on the employees’ interests and qualities. This approach generates a high level of motivation, satisfaction and innovativeness. One focus of CSR is health promotion with a broad range of activities for all employees worldwide. Sickness-related absences declined to 1.7 percent in 2009. High tables will be put in the meeting rooms in the Cube to provide a healthy change from sitting activities. Meetings can be held more efficiently when standing and are about 30 percent shorter. For R&M that is another example of real sustainability in practice.
R&M also accepts its social responsibility by sponsoring apprenticeships. R&M has doubled its number of apprenticeships since 2008. Young people from the Zurich highlands region of Switzerland are the main beneficiaries of these efforts. The training ratio is eight percent, about 2.3 percent higher than the Swiss average. The CSR Report deals comprehensively with supplier and partner relations, which are also characterized by quality, mutual respect and sustainability.
