Ericsson: ICT Is The Major Player In The Evolution Towards A Sustainable Society

One of the emerging trends in the ICT industry that gears towards sustainable and empowered societies is gaining a momentum, triggering the need for a change of the business strategy that companies in the telecommunication field deploy. This came out during a recent forum that was sponsored by Ericsson. At the event, Carl Mossfeldt, Vice president of the Tällberg foundation, provided his insight about global environmental change and the role of ICT in creating a sustainable society.
The pivotal elements of this major change are illustrated in the “Rework the world”, the largest project ever embarked on by Tällberg Foundation. Rework the world is a two year process, striving to highlight and boost innovative ventures and initiatives that combine the potential for creating large-scale employment opportunities with substantial impact on climate mitigation and adaptation.
Carl has demonstrated that the Middle East region has great potential to help drive the transformation of our societies into sustainability. The change is coming inevitably but there is a need to change the mindset and begin to embrace this strategic shift.
Corporations and companies from all over the world could recognize the need for switch in the long term and have started accordingly to change their way of doing business. The challenge is to speed up the process.
The Telecom turf is a major player in this transformation. For instance, the new technology can substitute travel with conferencing. ”The telecom is bound to explode”, says Mossfeldt, “We are already seeing the major impact of mobile phones on societies by changing people’s lives and mobile broadband enabling online communication as an alternative to travel.
Ericsson is one of the largest companies working hand in hand with the Tällberg foundation to change the world’s future vision. One such project is Millennium Project, which both Ericsson and the Tällberg Foundation are working closely with. It is one of the biggest projects where Ericsson is developing ways of communication in villages in Africa.” According to Mossfeldt this is one of the few projects that Ericsson is already engaged with , in addition to smart cities and solar sites among others.
Finally, we need to build a new socio-economic business model and invest in more strategic projects in order to save our ecosystem. We are living on the edge, and this creates risks for societies, not only as a result of climate change and ice level’s thawing, but also as a result of the disruption which generates chaos and causes people to relocate, either by choice or by force.
