Qtel Upgrades Mobile Broadband To Highest Speed Ever

Published Jun 6, 2010

Qtel’s ongoing support for the long-term “Broadband Nation” strategy for Qatar has taken another giant leap forward with the nationwide speed upgrade of its Mobile Broadband network.

The company has successfully upgraded its HSPA network to offer mobile download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps, and is set to begin another round of upgrades which should see speeds as high as 21 Mbps available by August 2010.

Qtel is also preparing to begin a trial process for 42 Mbps download speeds in 2010, to deliver the next level of cellular mobile telephony. When 42 Mbps becomes available, Qatar will benefit from some of the highest Internet speeds in the region, and will have access to high definition content over Mobile Broadband.

Khalil Ibrahim Al-Emadi, Executive Director, Networks, Qtel said: “We have a clear road-map in place that will see Qatar emerge as one of the best-connected nations not just in the region, but in the world. The enhancement of our Mobile Broadband network sits alongside our plans for Fibre-to-the-home and network upgrades that will ensure everybody can have the best Internet experience wherever they are in Qatar.”

More than 50,000 people in Qatar currently use Mobile Broadband solutions, logging into the Qtel network using Smartphones, laptops, gaming consoles and other wi-fi- enabled devices. The new speed enhancements will benefit all customers, at no extra cost, and a range of value enhancements are planned for the weeks and months ahead.

Qtel’s ongoing multi-million dollar investment in all aspects of the Internet infrastructure for Qatar has contributed to the overall reliability and quality of the network, which is one of the best in the region. In particular, Mobile Broadband from Qtel scores highly in terms on indoor and outdoor delivery, nationwide coverage and consistent reliability.

Adel Al Mutawa, Executive Director, Group Communications, Qtel said: “Qtel’s ongoing investment in the speed and quality of our Broadband network is part of our commitment to deliver the fastest and most positive Internet experience for all our customers. We believe that Mobile Broadband can make a real difference in terms of extending the choice of media available to our customers and providing them with flexible, nationwide access to the Internet, which is why we are consistently enhancing and upgrading our service.”

To ensure that customers get the most from the upgraded speeds, Qtel today launched the Qtel 21 Mbps USB modem, which is the fastest and first ever to be available in Qatar.

With wireless speeds that will make people feel they’re still connected at the office, the Qtel 21 Mbps USB modem is the fastest solution for people who need to stay productive on the move. It supports video, graphic and other high speed applications, and is interchangeable between desktop and notebook computers.

The arrival of the new 21 Mbps modem complements Qtel’s successful launch in April of its innovative My-Fi personal mobile hot spot, the pioneering device that enables people to create their own Internet access points from anywhere in Qatar.

Up to five people can access Mobile Broadband over the My-Fi solution, and sales have beaten expectations sinece the device was launched in April.

The ongoing speed upgrade by Qtel has delivered an immediate improvement in the average download speed for customers. Qtel offers by far the most reliable and accessible network in Qatar, supported by ongoing investment and a high level of technical resources.
