Ericsson Sees A Brighter Future With Broadband Everywhere

Published Jun 8, 2010

Convergence, regulation and innovation were amongst the key topics discussed at the Arab Advisors Group 7th Annual Media and Telecommunications Convergence Conference 2010 that was held in Amman on June 7th and 8th.

Ericsson at the event represented by Hans Oveseen, Vice President, Industry Relations and Marketing, Ericsson, emphasized the importance of planning the right infrastructure for convergence-based models and the emerging trends in the industry which lead to growth. Participants at the event agreed that the growth in the industry can be achieved through a set of regulations that encourage greater choice for consumers.

Mobile broadband growth is essential for empowerment of societies in the region by contributing to the GDP growth and the sustainable economic development as it bridges the digital divide, increases work efficiency and makes health care and education accessible to everyone. It also enhances competition and brings down the prices for the end-user.

Hans participation focused on ways to overcome the barriers to broadband growth in the region. He said, “we anticipate that governments will get more 'involved' in ensuring that broadband is affordable and accessible for all who want it so that society and industry continue to reap the benefits of being connected in an all connected world.”

“The combination of sustainable and organic growth is pivotal for the industry’s development in the foreseeable future.” He added, “Mobile broadband is the choice for vendors such as Ericsson that employ forward-thinking and social-oriented strategies for growth which are in sync with governments’ plans for societal and economic development.” Hans added,
The role that governments can play in the development scenarios is the provision of regulatory framework that encourages competition and supports technology neutral regulation.

Also, there is a need for regulation that benefits the use of technologies that deliver the best value for money and an economy of scale. This will be a driver for communication, which in turn, will drive positive economic development for individuals and governments. And when technology and economic scale increasingly converge, the market forces will serve as the sole regulator. Thus, the most scalable technology will always have an economic advantage by penetrating the markets more successfully creating increased competition, which, in turn, will drive down the cost for the end-user.

The two-day event that focuses on the enabling and accelerating of the Arab World's technological and business innovation, witnesses the participation of industry leaders, telecommunication companies leadership and a host of experts in the field ranging from media companies, vendors and online platform representatives.
