SMART Board™ Enhances Teaching & Learning In Jordan

Published Jun 28, 2010

SMART Technologies announces that a study by the Jordan Education Initiative (JEI) has found that 91 percent of students report they are more interested in learning when a SMART Board interactive whiteboard is used in the classroom. The study, SMART Interactive White Board Utilization in Al-Shifaa Bint Ouf School, published in March 2010, focuses on the impact of interactive whiteboard use on the engagement of grade eight and nine math and science students at Al-Shifaa Bent Ouf Secondary School in Amman, Jordan. According to the JEI study, over 90 percent of students report being more enthusiastic, positive and interested in learning when lessons are supported by the interactive whiteboard, while 86 percent of students agree that using the interactive whiteboard motivates them to participate in lessons. The study indicates that using SMART Board interactive whiteboards in classrooms enhances teaching and learning, effectively engages students and improves learning outcomes.

In 2007, SMART donated 18 SMART Board interactive whiteboards as part of the JEI Discovery Schools pilot project in Amman, Jordan. Thanks to their willingness to explore information and communication technology (ICT), five Discovery Schools were chosen to pilot the use of interactive whiteboards in classrooms. Following the one-year pilot, initial findings by the JEI indicated that SMART Board interactive whiteboards had been widely accepted by both teachers and students and provided significant benefits for teaching and learning. In 2009, the JEI undertook a second, more in-depth study to explore the value of using SMART Board interactive whiteboards in classrooms at Al-Shifaa Bent Ouf Secondary School, where interactive whiteboards had been in use the longest. SMART Interactive White Board Utilization indicates that using the interactive whiteboard to create, manage and deliver lessons increased teacher preparedness. In addition, more than 80 percent of students reported that using the interactive whiteboard encourages teachers to incorporate a variety of media into lesson activities to demonstrate complex concepts, which helps students understand these concepts more quickly and easily. For more information, see the JEI report.

“The more students take classes using the interactive whiteboard, the more they like the subject,” says Manal Qadura, Principal of Al-Shifaa Bint Ouf Secondary School. “Using the SMART Board in the classroom has allowed us to move from a dictation style of instruction to lessons where everyone can participate, bringing concepts closer to real-life experiences through the many media files available to us.”

“The Jordan Education Initiative is championing the use of ICT products to enhance student learning and improve outcomes,” says Nancy Knowlton, SMART’s CEO. “The results of the JEI study demonstrate once again the value of using a SMART Board interactive whiteboard in the classroom to engage students and support teaching and learning.”
