Her Excellency the Minister of Social Development Attends Microsoft Jordan’s NGO Connection Day

Under the Patronage of Her Excellency Hala Bseiso Lattouf, the Minister of Social Development, Microsoft Jordan organized the ‘NGO Connection Day’ in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development with the attendance of 250 active NGOs and civil society organizations.
Her Excellency Hala Lattouf, stated, “NGOs and civil society play a significant role in our community as fundamental decision makers that directly affect the sustainable development of our society with regards to knowledge and education and it is the responsibility of both the private and public sector to provide them with as much support as we can.”
She added, “Everyday IT is becoming even more important in our lives and we are increasingly becoming dependent on it to successfully complete our tasks and duties. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that we help NGOs make the best out of the advanced technologies that are available to them in order to help them achieve their goals more effectively and to enhance their ability to communicate with the local communities they serve.”
Mrs. Rula Ammuri, Microsoft Jordan Country Manager, stated, “Microsoft is one of the largest technology companies in the world, however, a company doesn’t succeed simply based on its size or how long it has been in the market, but more importantly, on how it communicates with its society and understands what their needs and requirements are. To that effect, it is very important for Microsoft to be involved and to serve our local community at various levels.”
Ammuri explained that Microsoft’s initiatives aim at strengthening its relationship with the local community, in addition to the education sector, with the aim of helping them to develop and expand their IT skills and capabilities. Ammuri highlighted a number of Microsoft initiatives including the Imagine Cup, DreamSpark, and the Partners in Learning (PiL) initiative, which aims at providing schools all over the world with modern IT tools to enhance education.
According to Ammuri, Microsoft also provides NGOs with various solutions and programs such as Office 2010 and Windows 7 that help them achieve their goals while enhancing performance. Windows 7 was developed to simplify the usage of Windows and provides features that help organizations improve performance while decreasing operational costs at the same time. SharePoint 2010 and Project 2010 are two of Microsoft’s latest technologies that can meet the growing demands of users for enhanced collaboration, communication, data transfer, data access and security.
On an international level, Microsoft’s goals falls in line with the UN Millennium Goals especially those related to combating poverty, expanding knowledge and education and collaboration for development. Microsoft’s programs and initiatives provide basic skills that are vital to enhance the social and economic development for underserved communities.
On a national level, Microsoft Jordan’s goals fall in line with the National ICT Strategy, which aims at increasing employment within the IT sector, increasing internet penetration to 50 percent, and providing the local IT ecosystem with the opportunities to grow and develop.
The Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) has also impacted the local community by providing numerous programs that help develop local IT skills, provide support to local startups and companies in addition to providing students with opportunities to create and innovate. In 2009, the MIC benefited 408 developers, 126 students, 756 IT professionals, 120 partners and 15 startups.
The NGO Connection Day highlighted Microsoft’s role in providing the latest technologies and solutions to NGOs to help achieve their goals, and providing them with the means to learn how to use these technologies to increase productivity and enhance performance.
