Trend Micro™ Encryption Achieves Lowest Total Cost Of Ownership

Published Jul 18, 2010

Trend Micro Encryption, an email encryption solution which uses Identity-Based encryption (IBE) technologies, achieved the lowest total cost of ownership compared with the costs of competing Public Key Infrastructure-based (PKI) email encryption solutions, according to independent research firm Enterprise Strategy Group.

“Our analysis concluded that Trend Micro Encryption provides a lower cost of ownership compared to competing PKI offerings due primarily to lower upfront deployment costs and reduced ongoing key management costs,” said Jon Oltsik, founder and senior principal analyst of Enterprise Strategy Group. “Among the offerings from reputable vendors, customers using Trend Micro Encryption are spending about 22 percent of what they would pay for others’ PKI solutions.”

“Trend Micro Encryption’s cloud-based architecture provides the confidentiality and integrity benefits of email encryption without the technology headaches. This alone should make Trend Micro Encryption a top email encryption choice for most organizations,” said Oltsik.

The analysis of the true costs of email encryption, conducted by Enterprise Strategy Group and commissioned by Trend Micro, found that Trend Micro’s IBE-based email encryption solution can deliver real financial benefits from the initial purchase through product deployment and ongoing operations; the total cost of ownership for the Trend Micro Encryption vs. PKI solutions yielded a 78 percent savings.

“We are not surprised by the results of this TCO analysis. We found that Trend Micro Encryption would be less than one-third of the cost of competing PKI solutions, in terms of management,” said Paul Pettitt, managing director, Origo Services.

A significant amount of the certificate and key managementburden involved in PKI encryption is eliminated in IBE email encryption solutions, greatly simplifying implementation and operations. The benefits of Trend Micro Encryption for email include: a simplified architecture, easier deployment, user transparency, and lower cost of operations. Trend Micro Encryption for email solutions are designed to streamline the email encryption architecture, ease user registration, simplify business processes, and offload key management tasks to the cloud, thus making email encryption much more attractive to reluctant organizations.

“The ease of use with Trend Micro™ Hosted Email Encryption is amazing. No passcodes or special software—it just works and there is no user training required. My end users couldn’t be happier,” said Chris Palipchak, director of IT, Quality Life Services.

According to the report, organizations exchange sensitive, private, and regulated data with others via unencrypted email all over the public Internet. Over the past five years there has been a total of 2,650 data breach incidents reported (source: datalossdb.org). These data breaches, along with general concern about data security, have driven numerous international, federal, state, and industry regulations aimed at protecting private records.

- Highlights from the analysis include:

Trend Micro Encryption ongoing management costs are 25 percent of PKI solutions.

Trend Micro Encryption end user training and courseware saves 75 percent over PKI solutions.

Trend Micro Encryption helpdesk costs are 12 percent of PKI solutions.

ESG’s findings were based upon a model of 1,000 users based in two different facilities. To calculate the potential savings, ESG considered 10 parameters encompassing:Server and hardware costs, costs of software and installation, training and help-desk costs, and management, maintenance, support and administration costs.
