Riverbed Announces Comprehensive WAN Optimization And Secure WEB Gateway Solution Based On Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010

Published Jul 19, 2010

Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD), the IT performance company, announced an extension of its relationship with Microsoft through the delivery of a comprehensive best of breed secure Web gateway and WAN optimization solution for organizations with remote offices. The joint solution combines Riverbed® award-winning WAN optimization technology with Microsoft’s Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG) 2010 solution into a single appliance. This offering enables customers to virtualize their branch office infrastructure and deliver LAN-like application performance for branch users while protecting corporate networks from Web security threats such as malware and spam.

With this offering, Riverbed and Microsoft customers have the ability to further virtualize IT resources at the branch in a cost-effective manner while delivering end to end security. The solution takes advantage of the capabilities of the Riverbed Services Platform (RSP), a virtualized platform capable of running branch services, integrated with the Steelhead® appliance hardware. RSP allows customers to deploy up to five best of breed branch services on a single device, enabling organizations to consolidate the hardware infrastructure at the branch office, resulting in easier IT management and lower operational overhead and power costs. In addition to the TMG security platform,

Riverbed customers have the ability to virtualize and run other Microsoft services on the RSP, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, Active Directory and DNS/DHCP.

“Microsoft has a long history of working with Riverbed to help our mutual customers achieve strategic initiatives, such as virtualization,” said Zakie Mashiah, Principal Group Manager in the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft. “This joint solution enables organizations to realize what we call Business Ready Security through Riverbed best of breed WAN optimization solutions fully integrated with our comprehensive Web security solution in a way that is simple to manage and deploy.”

Customers deploying Microsoft’s TMG security platform on RSP are able to protect their businesses from malware and other threats, and enable employees to safely and productively use the Internet. TMG provides multiple layers of continuously updated protections that are integrated into a unified, easy to manage gateway, reducing the cost of Web security at the branch office. Forefront TMG 2010 running on RSP provides multiple inspection technologies, including application and network level firewalls, intrusion prevention and malware filtering, to keep users safe from Web-based attacks and prevent malware outbreaks on the enterprise caused by inadvertent employee visits to malicious sites or by downloads of infected files. Additionally, RSP integration with the Forefront TMG Web Protection Service enables customers to enforce a consistent Web security policy for application protection, malware inspection and URL filtering within the branch. When taking advantage of TMG on the RSP, enterprises are able to obtain all of these security benefits and WAN optimization, while simplifying the management and lowering the costs of its edge services.

“Customers are increasingly looking to virtualize IT resources at the branch office in order to reduce costs and simplify management,” said Venugopal Pai, vice president, global alliances at Riverbed. “RSP offers customers the flexibility to virtualize their key edge services such as Microsoft’s TMG secure Web gateway while realizing the benefits of Riverbed best of class WAN optimization solutions. By partnering with companies like Microsoft, Riverbed is the only vendor to offer a single appliance that combines WAN optimization with a complete end to end security offering.”
