Yahoo! Maktoob, the Arab world’s leading online media destination, has announced the launch of new Ramadan features to its website to better connect with all those celebrating the spirit of Ramadan. The newly updated website will provide richer content as well as new additions that will provide Ramadan participants with a platform to interact and find out the latest news during the holy month. The Ramadan micro-site contains three main sections addressing ‘Spiritualities’, ‘Ramadan and People’ and ‘Entertainment’ which enable Yahoo! Maktoob to successfully engage for the Arabic speaking world.
“Through these new features, we hope to provide a customized platform for people practicing the spirit of Ramadan and introduce regionally relevant content to our users in order to provide an engaging online experience during the holy month of Ramadan “ said Ahmed Nassef, VP and Managing Director of Yahoo! Middle East.
The new features will allow users to stay updated with the latest content of the different sections within the site and will include downloads for Ramadan-specific screensavers and wallpaper, access to Ramadan news feeds via web-slice, gadgets, a new contest and a full TV guide. To further commemorate and compliment the Holy Month, Yahoo! Maktoob will be launching the recently announced Video On Demand Channel (VOD) where videos and shows can be selected through the TV guide. VOD also has Ramadan related videos and shows to keep people up to speed on latest broadcasts.
VOD users will be able to browse through the available channels and shows, and view the videos they choose for free and at their convenience, any time and any where they please. VOD’s advantage is that it reaches out to the maximum amount of users since there are no time constraints available. Yahoo is aiming for VOD to become the top destination for free quality video content in the region.
A section of the Ramadan website will include ‘Quran Kareem’ through which users will be able to read the Quran with the full tafseer (The interpretation of the holy Qur’an) and mark the position where they stop so that when they log in to their accounts the next time they can continue reading from where they stopped. The Tajweed section will aim to assist people in following the tajweed reading rules when reading the Quran.
The website’s entertainment section will offer users a TV guide for Ramadan shows, original articles about Ramadan ethics and a competition offering the equivalent of USD 1,000 to the winner, USD 500 for 2nd prize, 250USD for 3rd and 4th prizes alongside many other cash prizes. The website will also address family and women issues such as health and beauty articles and Fatawa related to women issues in addition to offering users the chance to check out latest Ramadan recipes and cooking tips.
A revamped SMS service will also allow users to send free SMS messages to congratulate their beloved ones on Ramadan and Eid.
Ahmed Nassef added, “In our continuous effort to be at the centre of people’s online lives, we are delighted to offer a special Ramadan service which we hope will provide users with a new enriching experience during the Ramadan month.”
Following Yahoo!’s entrance in the Middle East market, since its acquisition of Maktoob.com, the largest online Arabic portal in 2009, Yahoo! has worked on a number of strategic initiatives to strengthen and support content on the internet for the Arab world.
