Qtel’s E-Waste Programme Makes Huge Environmental Impact

Published Sep 23, 2010

Qtel’s E-Waste Recycling Programme has been a huge success in its first months, collecting more than 27 tonnes of e-waste in the first 72 days, figures released today reveal.

In total, more than 300 mobile phones and 300 different mobile phone accessories have been collected, along with an incredible 61 pallets of e-waste from across the country.

The results from the first months are exceptional, far exceeding the initial results from similar campaigns in neighbouring countries, and reflect the strong desire among the people of Qatar to safeguard the local environment.

Qtel is working with a range of corporate partners on the programme, including Aramex, Enviroserve and Qatari Diar Vinci Construction (QDVC), which have enabled the significant success of the first months.

Highlights of the campaign so far include Qtel’s Qtel “Big Drop” event, which took place in August and gathered nearly four tonnes of electronic waste in a single day.

In addition, recycling boxes have been placed in Qtel Shops and partner locations across the country, ensuring that everyone who wants to recycle their mobile phone is able to do so.

Recycling e-waste responsibly is a major Qtel initiative, to help reduce the impact of e-waste on the community in Qatar. The metals contained within modern electronic goods can be dangerous if disposed of in an unsafe manner, and can cause disruption to the local environment.

Qtel’s e-waste programme collects unwanted electronic equipment and ships it overseas to a recycling plant in Singapore, where it is safely repurposed. Customers who elect to recycle unwanted mobile phones with Qtel have the chance to win a wide range of prizes through a special raffle hosted by Qtel.
