Qtel Completes Formal Agreement with Huawei

Published Sep 30, 2010

Qtel completed an agreement with Huawei that will see both companies working together on the ambitious “Fibre to the Home” (FTTH) programme, which aims to connect buildings in Qatar with advanced Broadband services over the next three years.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Nasser Marafih, Chief Executive Officer of Qtel and Mr. Zha Jun, President Network Products Huawei, in a ceremony witnessed by the Chinese Ambassador to Qatar, Yue Xiaoyong.

Following the announcement of the programme in March 2010, work on the new network began this summer. The FTTH programme will be rolled-out over different areas in Qatar in the coming months, with survey teams visiting different areas and liaising with residents to install the new connections.

As the largest infrastructure project of its kind ever carried out by Qtel, the programme is a key strand of Qatar’s Broadband Nation strategy, which aims to drive the development of the knowledge-based economy through the deployment of some of the world’s most advanced network technology. The new fibre network will provide a host of benefits for the people of Qatar, as well as making an important contribution to the educational, commercial and governmental sectors.

Dr. Nasser Marafih, Chief Executive Officer, Qtel, said: “Today’s agreement is an important strategic alliance that will make an important contribution to the growth and development of the knowledge-based economy in Qatar. We want to ensure that Qatar is one of the best-connected countries not just in the region, but in the world, and the advanced fibre network will play a key role in helping us achieve that goal.”

Fibre to the Home will deliver Internet speeds of up to 100Mbps, changing the way people experience online education and entertainment.

The agreement between Qtel and Huawei will be supported by a joint innovation centre in Qatar, which will conduct original research in the field of enhanced communication services, aimed at making a distinct contribution to the community in Qatar.

“Through our partnership with Qtel, Huawei aims to deliver a world-class broadband experience to the people of Qatar. The FTTH solution will provide the foundations for the next generation of technology services in Qatar, and will provide an important stimulus for companies, schools, colleges and government departments,” said Mr. Zha Jun, President Network Products Huawei.

Based on a terabit access platform, the new solution will provide unified access to voice and data solutions, and support such advanced applications such as HD-TV, ultra high-speed Internet services, video conferences, and Entertainment on Demand.

The robust bandwidth capacity of the new solution will deliver a much higher quality of online experience for customers in Qatar, while ensuring that the infrastructure is capable of supporting the next generation of services and applications.

The process, which will continue throughout the year and into 2012, will be undertaken in cooperation with all relevant authorities and government bodies, to minimize inconvenience.

In 2009, during the trial phase of the FTTH network, Qtel and Huawei jointly tested a new GPON FTTH network, which provided ultra high speed connectivity to houses in Mesaieed and West Bay Lagoon. As a result, customers living in these areas are already enjoying a number of important benefits, including high-speed Internet and high definition television.

Qtel’s new fibre network will fuel an important range of business benefits for companies across Qatar. Advanced bandwidth capacity will support new business applications and advanced enterprise software seamlessly, enabling companies to continue to upgrade to more advanced software easily. Small businesses in particular will benefit from some of the fastest Internet speeds in the region.

The project supports the wider Vision 2030 for Qatar, which aims to transform Qatar into an advanced country capable of sustaining its own development and providing a high standard of living for all its people and generations to come.
