Norton Does More With Specifically Designed Internet Security Solutions For The Family Home

Published Oct 21, 2010

With the number of computer system crashes due to cyber attacks in the UAE totaling 248,000 in the last months of 2009, the need for elite standards of consumer endpoint security software is higher than ever. As a result of findings from the Norton Online Family Report, an insightful snapshot into the disconnects between parents and children surrounding online behaviour, Norton from Symantec has developed a diverse variety of free tools with the launch of Norton Internet Security 2011 and Norton AntiVirus 2011 that speak to need to protect yourself and your family in the home at no additional cost.

To alleviate the fears of the six out of ten parents that worry about their children being exposed to indecent material fear they’ll give out too much personal information and because any infected machine poses a risk to the broader online community, Norton from Symantec is offering powerful free tools for consumers to provide all computer users with a deeper level of protection including the following:

- Norton Safe Web Lite, a downloadable toolbar that identifies risky sites before users click on them in search results.

- Norton Safe Web for Facebook, scans current Facebook news feeds to see if they contain links that are unsafe.

- Norton Online Family helps keep kids stay safe online for free while encouraging open communication with their parents about their online activities. This Web-based service gives parents peace of mind by keeping them informed about their kids’ online activities, providing the tools to talk with their kids about common-sense Internet safety, and allowing them to work with their children to manage which types of sites they can visit.

Tamim Taufiq, Head of Consumer Sales MEA commented;

“In developing Consumer products we understand that the need for reliable and consistent internet security in the home is not only imperative but is a very delicate process in catering to the individual needs of each member. As adults, we tend to visit a number of trusted websites whereas children surf the Internet much more freely – for fun and for homework. This exposes them, and their families, to many more online risks. Children are feeling responsible about many things that are not their fault and emotions are running high thus it is crucial children know their parents will listen to them and help them to set things right. f they think they’ll be blamed or punished, the problem will only get worse.”

The Norton Online Family Report:

The Report encompasses research from more than 7,000 adults and 2,800 children, aged eight to 17, in 14 different countries and was designed to examine children’s online behavior and experiences compared with parents’ knowledge and understanding of these, aiming to offer advice and guidance for concerned parents on how to bridge the gaps. Specifically the Report highlighted that parents undermined the extent to which children download games, music and video and showed the need to monitor such key activities which may expose children to inappropriate content and encourage them to disclose their personal details.

Key Findings:

- 62% of children worldwide have had a negative online experience, including someone they didn’t know tried to add them as a friend on a social networking site or even tried to get them to meet in real life to downloading a virus or seeing violent or nude images online. However, only 45% of parents are aware of this.
- Globally, children are spending more time online: on average, more than 1.6 hours per day, adding up to around 11.4 hours per week, an increase of 10% compared to 2009 figure.
- In total, 44% of adults think parents should have full control of their children’s online activities while 5% of all parents admit they have no idea what their children are doing online.

Norton from Symantec is currently exhibiting at GITEX 2010 in Hall 3, Stand C3-1.
