Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Intel And Science Age Society Join Forces To Announce First Ever ‘Intel Science Competition - Arab World’

Intel Corporation and Science Age Society (SAS) announced the launch of the first ever “Intel Science Competition - Arab World” that will take place in Egypt to host the brightest students from 10 Arab countries at Bibliotheca Alexandrina from December 7-9, 2010, under patronage of the Arab League.
More than 120 participants from 10 Arab countries are scheduled to participate in Intel Science Competition Arab World (ISC-AW). Contestants from Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia und the United Arab Emirates will showcase their distinguished science projects in various scientific and social specializations to compete for financial awards totaling $20,000 and scholarships from top Arab universities.
Shelly Esque, Intel Vice President for Legal and Corporate Affairs, Director of Corporate Affairs Group and President of the Intel Foundation, who will be visiting Egypt at the time of the Competition, said: “We believe that today’s youth are the key for solving global challenges, and it is critical that they have the opportunity to pursue scientific research to tackle local and global problems.”
Prof. Essam Sharaf, Chairman of Science Age Society, said: “There is a vital need in the Arab world to enhance education and enable new generations to actively take part in the global knowledge-based economy. Since putting focus on students’ innovative skills has become an essential need in our Arab region, the initiative by Intel and Science Age Society to provide the environment that supports the intellect of our creative children is an example to be followed; and we wish to see a repeat of such endeavors where we benefit from the long experience of global pioneering companies like Intel.”
Eng. Hoda El-Mikaty, Director of the Planetarium Science Center at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina explained that the birth of the Arab region competition in 2010 is the outcome of fruitful collaborations between Intel Egypt, the Library and Science Age Society that have organized national fairs together since 2007. “We are proud to host the first regional fair as it marks the first step towards building an active Arab knowledge society capable of developing and advancing Science and Technology in the Arab region and worldwide. In line with the Library’s mission, we expect our young scientists and researchers to work in teams on all levels of community, national, regional and international, will enhance the universal language of science that is the cornerstone of peace and sustainable development.”
The Intel Science Competition - Arab World is an Arab competition organized by Intel Corporation in cooperation with Science Age Society for the first time on the Arab world level, with the aim of encouraging intermediate and secondary level students of the age group 14-18 to gain interest in scientific research and execute scientific and research projects based on the methodology and tenets of scientific research.
The competition aims to encourage joint Arab work and cooperation in the different areas of scientific research and education. The initiative is part of Intel’s commitment to support sustained economic growth in the Arab region by fostering local innovation and research capacity. In collaboration with governments and educators, Intel is helping to transform education, expanding local research initiatives, and applying state-of-the-art technologies to increase local talent and enable countries to compete in the global economy.
Arab strategic partners participating in the competition include UAE Ministry of Education, Oman Ministry of Education, the King Abdulaziz & his Companions Foundation for the Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), Hariri Foundation in Lebanon, Alnayzak Foundation in Palestine, Ministry of Education in Egypt, Ministry of Education in Morocco, Ministry of Education in Tunisia, Alexandria Library in Egypt, Ministry of Education in Kuwait, and the Kuwait Science Club.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held yearly in the Unites States (Intel ISEF) is the world’s largest science competitions for pre-university levels that is dubbed by many as “Young Scientists Nobel” competition. The fair seeks to involve pre-university students in science and research projects in order to encourage the development of their research, analytical and engineering skills. It accepts students from Grade 9-12, offering them the opportunity to put on display their innovations in social sciences, chemistry, biochemistry, computer science, biology, geology, engineering, environment, mathematics, health sciences, physics, space sciences and zoology.
