Microsoft Coordinates With Concerned Agencies In Dubai For Latest Anti-Piracy Raid
Published Nov 10, 2010

Dubai's anti-piracy agencies recently collaborated with Microsoft Gulf to conduct a raid on a Dubai-based IT reseller. The raid resulted in the confiscation of allegedly counterfeit Microsoft Windows XP Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) packages and loose Microsoft Windows Certificate of Authenticity (COA) labels and CDs. One person has been arrested and criminally charged following the raid. The criminal investigation is ongoing and the seized items are currently being examined by the concerned agencies.
“The Ministry of Economy is committed to addressing IPR violations in the country, particularly software piracy. With the steady growth of the UAE’s IT sector and its significant influence on economic progress, every effort must be made to prevent acts of piracy from compromising the growth and sustained development of this industry,” said Abdullah Al Hussain, Director of the Censorship Department, UAE Ministry of Economy.
“Tackling software piracy requires concerted efforts by the rights holders, the reseller channel, the government and the consumers. The resellers in particular need to be more responsible and take the time to fully understand the impact of selling counterfeit software, both on the IT industry and the national economy as a whole. We fully support the efforts of the UAE Ministry of Economy in protecting intellectual property rights across the country,” concluded Jawad Al Redha, IPR Manager, Microsoft Gulf.
