5 Billion Mobile Users Worldwide, What Are You Waiting For?
Published Nov 30, 2010

According to a report from ABI Research worldwide mobile subscriptions have passed 5 Billion and considering the world population is around 6.7 billion and there are “only” an estimated 1 Billion users that have access to a computer this number confirms what we all know: Mobiles are not the next big thing, mobiles are the big thing.
Of course it’s not only about those who carry a 1Ghz processor smartphone the size of a chocolate bar in their pockets and spend 70-80 minutes a day on mobile applications (AdMob Mobile Metrics - May 2010). However, for marketers these users represent the easier target out of the 5 Billion.
Regionally mobile traffic on websites accounts for up to 15% of site visits and not only that; in some MENA countries you will find mobile data consumption higher than actual web visitors. This is due to the fact that workstations are not as easily accessible to the population. They all have mobile phones though.
With mobiles the real challenges remains to map your target audience against the devices they use, but once that is done the benefits are clear. Mobiles are timely and can provide you with instant response mechanisms. It’s a great value add for your customers and can create a long lasting connection between the user and your brand.
All in all there is still a lot of opportunity for local brands to jump onto the mobile train, but the time is definitely right...so what are you waiting for?
