Fiber-Based Networks: A Win-Win Solution For All

Published Dec 2, 2010

Broadband has evolved to more than a promising technology that has reshaped the telecommunication industry and has empowered societies. More so, fiber-based networks are seen as the future of technology which is continuously altered by a high demand of new services and operators’ exponential growth.

“Fiber access provides unlimited bandwidth enabling the growth of attractive packages and better quality services for the end-users,” said Georges Antoun, Head of Product Area IP and Broadband Networks, Ericsson. “With deep fiber access, you can leverage what existing infrastructure you have and simply attach fiber technology onto it.”

Antoun was addressing a forum sponsored by Ericsson in Beirut on November 30. He said, “The bottom line is that the integrated fiber solutions of Ericsson’s end-to-end capability provide for dealing with the challenges that operators need to overcome in order to efficiently roll-out an ever increasing array of new services.”

Fiber access enables operators to pursue an ambition to deliver fast broadband, Internet, IPTV and video-on-demand. Furthermore, Ericsson’s deep access portfolio enables new media rich revenues, while lowering networks costs. Ericsson provides a comprehensive portfolio for any FTTx application regardless if a residential roll-out, mobile backhaul or business application is rolled out.

However, in offering cutting-edge solutions operators need to overcome some challenges related to quality, cost, speed of deployment and flexibility. “Although deploying fiber is associated with costs it brings in value to the operator,” said Antoun.

In applying Fiber solutions the operator will have greater flexibility. They should be able to upgrade and offer different packages. They will easily monitor the network, hence reducing the operational cost.

Commenting on this issue, Tarek Saadi, President of Ericsson North Middle East said: “In our region and particularly in Lebanon, we see a rising demand for the Broadband solution, a necessity for a competitive society.”

“For fixed access, the most effective solution is optical fiber as close as possible to the home (FTTH), and/or evolved copper technology (VDSL2). For mobile access, the best approach is to use HSPA and LTE. This combination provides mobility with a good broadband speed: access to internet on the move, and 50Mbps speeds to the home. This opens the door to a range of new services that users are demanding: e.g. high-definition, interactive IPTV at home and everywhere, and advanced internet services on the move” concluded Mr. Saadi.
