Anti-Piracy Raid On Dubai Reseller

Published Dec 9, 2010

Anti-piracy authorities in Dubai recently collaborated with Microsoft Gulf, a member of the Business Software Alliance (BSA), the world’s foremost advocate for the software industry, to conduct a raid on a Dubai-based IT reseller in Bur Dubai. The raid resulted in the confiscation of over 125 pieces of suspected counterfeit Microsoft software, including Windows XP, Windows 7 and Office 2010. One person has been arrested and criminally charged. The high quality counterfeit, originating from China, is shipped as a complete package, including fake copper hologram CDs and Certificates of Authenticity, and is intended to con unsuspecting consumers into thinking they are buying genuine software.

“Pirates look for any opportunity to take advantage of a “customer” and use increasingly sophisticated methods to take advantage of consumers,” said Dale Waterman, Microsoft’s Corporate Attorney for Anti-Piracy for the Middle East and Africa. “The next time a consumer is in the market for software, they should consider these points to help ensure the product is authentic: a) Make sure you are buying from a reputable reseller; if needed, do your homework and collect feedback about the seller. b) If shopping online, check the online seller’s price against the estimated retail value of the software. If the price for software seems too good to be true, it probably is. c) Be especially cautious when dealing with software sellers in other countries. The physical distance, differences in legal systems and other factors can complicate matters if the transaction goes awry. d) Avoid sellers offering “back-up” copies or compilations of software titles from different publishers on a single disk, as it’s a clear indication the software is illegal. e) Be sure your anti-virus software and firewalls are up-to-date, that way if you fall victim to counterfeit software you’re protected against the viruses and malware that often times result from counterfeits.”

“The regular anti-piracy raids being conducted in the UAE send a strong and clear message that intellectual property rights violation of any kind will not be tolerated in the country. The Ministry of Economy will continue to extend all possible support to the concerned authorities to curb piracy and promote the sustained growth of the UAE’s IT sector,” said Abdullah Al Hussain, Director of the Censorship Department, UAE Ministry of Economy.

“The strong support we have been receiving from the UAE Ministry of Economy and concerned anti-piracy authorities have been instrumental in the sustained success of our anti-piracy operations. The latest raid in Dubai will once again send a strong message to counterfeiters and IT resellers that any form of piracy will be firmly dealt with,” said Jawad Al Redha, BSA Chair in the Gulf region.
