Canon Middle East Celebrates Another Milestone Year For Its Environmental Commitment
Published Jan 2, 2011

Canon Middle East, leader in imaging solutions, has revealed that it has achieved significantly positive results with its environmental conservation and sustainable development initiatives for 2010, highlighting the company's commitment to be a socially responsible and environmentally conscious business organisation. Canon Middle East’s environmental agenda for 2010 covered important aspects of its business operations and focused on minimising the carbon footprint from the use of Canon products, until the product recycling stage. The action plan also covered office energy saving campaigns.
One of the key initiatives implemented by Canon Middle East this year has been the signing of a partnership agreement with EnviroServe to ensure proper disposal and recycling of end of life Canon consumer electronic products and service parts across the Middle East. Another important milestone is the attainment by Canon Emirates of the ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for environmental management system. Canon also took part and initiated various civic oriented activities this year, including a blood donation drive in partnership with Dubai Internet City and Sharjah Blood Bank in October 2010, and also the exclusive screening of the Earth movie for Canon employees to raise awareness on environmental issues.
Canon Middle East also participated in Emirates Environmental Group’s (EEG) “UAE Clean Up drive” initiative on December 12, 2010, where more than 50 employees from Canon Middle East and Canon Emirates participated. According to EEG, this year more than 20,000 participants across 106 locations in all seven emirates joined the Clean Up UAE drive and collected 98 tons of waste.
Another significant development that complemented Canon Middle East’s environmental commitment was the signing of the company’s licensing agreement with Emirates Wildlife Society for the X-MARK 1 solar powered business calculator that is manufactured using residual parts from Canon digital cameras. Under the terms of the agreement, Canon Middle East will donate 10 per cent from the sale of the X-MARK 1 to EWS-WWF to help finance its environmental conservation and education programs.
Canon recognizes the critical importance of protecting and conserving the environment by implementing sustainable practices across all areas of our business operations. For this year, we are pleased to have continued to make progress in reducing the company’s overall carbon footprint while we have also succeeded in dramatically reducing the CO2 emissions of our products over their entire lifecycle, which is a significant achievement by any standard," said Anurag Agrawal, Managing Director, Canon Middle East.
Our commitment to the environment is likewise reflected through our participation in wide ranging CSR initiatives that promote environmental awareness and sustainability across the Middle East. In addition, Canon Europe also issues the EMEA Sustainability report to highlight our commitment to the environment across the world. Canon's mission is to empower creativity and innovation at home and at work, and we aim to achieve this through a socially responsible approach and using environmentally conscious technology solutions," added Agrawal.
In line with the company's sustainable growth, Canon Inc. now uses uniquely developed plant derived biomass plastics in its products, particularly for touch pens, operational buttons and other parts that make direct contact with users. Canon Europe has also started employing 100 per cent recycled materials for such internal parts as cord guides in MFDs, and has also focused on improving the power efficiency of its products by incorporating environmental factors during the product design and development.
Canon's continuing commitment to the environment is in line with the company's philosophy of Kyosei, which is the concept of living and working together for the common good. Through Canon's proactive environmental commitment, we hope to set an example for others to emulate and to ultimately encourage all members of society to contribute in making our planet and our communities a much better place to live," concluded Agrawal.
