Humanitarian Rower Selects Compact Thuraya Solutions for Challenging Atlantic Journey

Within coming days, Mr. Victor Mooney will be embarking on the humanitarian journey of crossing the Atlantic Ocean by his 21 foot rowing boat. The cause that the American PR specialist is supporting is global AIDS awareness and protection. During the journey that begins in Cape Verde and ends in Abu Dhabi, Mr. Mooney will be deploying Thuraya’s satellite based services for communications.
Specifically, he will be using both broadband (through Thuraya IP) and voice solutions (via Thuraya XT) for updates, emergency communications, weather reports, streaming and to stay in touch with his family and friends.
As this is going to be a challenging trip I had to be careful in my selection of a communication partner. I researched and read a lot about several satcom products and was impressed with Thuraya. The IP data solution and the XT handheld prove to be the ultimate choice from amongst other available satellite solutions in the market,” said Mr. Mooney.
What made me opt for Thuraya was the compact and sleek design of their devices. As I will be all by myself on a boat that is not very large, I need communication tools that do not take up much space. Both Thuraya IP and XT meet this criterion best in the satellite telecom world. I also need solutions that are easy to use and with Thuraya IP’s plug and play system I do not have to worry about installing additional software,” explained Mr. Mooney.
I was also assured by some experienced satellite telecom users on the superb quality and reliability of Thuraya’s network, which gives me personal comfort on safety since I will be at sea the whole time,” he elaborated.
He also added that since his journey involves high temperatures and a moist atmosphere he is in need of solutions that are tough and perform well in a marine environment. “The XT handheld is very dependable at sea. While using it I do not have to worry about access to the network or the inability of the phone to operate when it is splashed with water. The design of the phone is ideal for emergency situations because even when the antenna is stowed I can still be notified when someone tries to call me,” he said.
“The main advantage of Thuraya IP is that it is user friendly and has diverse capabilities. I look forward to streaming with the IP solution to provide a live video atmosphere to my supporters and staying in contact via email with the relevant authorities. With it I can easily update my website as well. The freedom of asymmetric streaming which allows me to choose different upload and download speeds means that I do not have to worry about data taking time to be received or sent,” said Mr. Mooney.
The first leg of Mr. Mooney’s journey will involve him rowing from Cape Verde to New York. He will then ship his boat to Djibouti from where he will sail onto Abu Dhabi.
We are proud to be associated with such a human campaign geared towards raising awareness for AIDS across the globe. This journey across the Atlantic is a bold endeavor and Thuraya is excited to be supporting Mr. Mooney as part of its CSR activities,” said Thuraya’s Vice President Corporate Communications, Mr. Ebrahim Khalil Ebrahim.
Thuraya IP is the world’s smallest satellite broadband solution that is uniquely A-5 sized making it highly portable and compact. It is based on a comfortable plug and play system and supported by a congestion-free network. For high quality service at cost-effective rates it is the only satellite broadband solution that offers asymmetric streaming allowing customers to select different upload and download speeds.
Thuraya XT is branded the world’s toughest satellite phone due to its robust features. It provides reliable walk and talk mobile communications as a result of its omni-directional antenna. The handheld has the fastest data service and is the only satellite phone to provide GPS waypoint navigation.
