Middle East Sees Increase In Government Sector Demand For Next Generation Public Safety Solutions

Published Feb 24, 2011

Motorola Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: MSI), Executives, speaking at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi, described how government sectors in the Middle East were increasing demand for next generation public safety solutions. Trends highlighted included the migration of applications from fixed to mobile devices as a result of Long Term Evolution (LTE), in addition to innovations in wireless networks solutions (WNS), two-way radios and enterprise mobility.

Next Generation of Public Safety:

2010 saw Motorola Solutions unveil the industry’s most comprehensive plan for delivering advanced communications to the nation’s public safety agencies. This “Next Generation of Public Safety” strategy establishes the building blocks that extend from the mission critical core for first-responders, allowing the realization of true mobile broadband connection speeds and access to rich-media applications, delivered on advanced collaborative data devices.

“In developing our next-generation public-safety plan, Motorola defined six key areas of innovation; mobile broadband, interoperability solutions, integrated command, video security, advanced devices, and workforce mobility. They are designed to outline how public safety agencies can leverage their investments to dramatically enhance situational awareness with real-time, rich-media collaboration, improve productivity for day-to-day operations and heighten disaster preparedness,” said Motaz Hourani, vice president, Motorola Solutions.

LTE is the primary technology being considered by public safety and government organizations for broadband applications in the foreseeable future. LTE is a standards-based technology that delivers something that many public safety and governmental organizations have been requesting for years: a cost-effective way to meet their broadband communications needs and one that gives them a greater selection of devices and applications.

Wireless Network Solutions:

The proliferation of WiFi-enabled devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptop computers, is changing the way that people access information. For this trend to continue on its sharp path of adoption, modern wireless infrastructure must keep pace with the increasing demand for high-speed connections that enable mobile access to bandwidth-hungry content like video.

“Moving into 2011 and beyond, Motorola Solutions predicts an increase in WNS solutions being used by government sectors in the Middle East. The wide array of wireless technologies available helps enable organizations to mobilize more applications for both employees and the general public, improving the quality of people’s lives within a municipal area,” commented Hourani.

For example, certain cities in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have deployed WNS with traffic cameras to help them monitor and manage traffic situations, enabling their system to be more effective, safer and more secure.

According to Motorola Solutions, wireless local area networks (WLANs) are evolving partly due to new standards being put in place. There is an increase in installations across in almost every major vertical, with growing adoption across government entities in the Middle East. Data security, communications and reliability are business enablers on which no organization can afford to compromise, thus having the right vendor and support is a key driver for every business.

In October 2010, the Motorola Solutions business introduced its new WiNG 5 Wireless WLAN architecture. During the event, Motorola established a Guinness World Record for the ‘Most Powerful Wireless Access Point’ as demonstrated by the highest number of 802.11n wireless connections streaming unicast video content to 84 laptop computers from a single Motorola AP 7131N access point. This demonstration included full security running the industry leading AirDefense network security solution by Motorola as well. Performance without compromise in network security is a standard requirement in systems.

Two-Way Radios:

With the emergence of the digital platform, a new era of two-way radio technology has now arrived. Its enhanced features, such as greater performance, productivity and backward compatibility with analogue systems, make it a cost-effective solution for enterprises operating in noisy environments.

“In addition, the Middle East will continue to see an increase in the use of the latest digital two-way radio technology that provides government entities, construction companies, manufacturing, and oil and gas firms with clearer communication, as well as the necessary tools to improve functionality in the workplace,” continued Hourani.

Two-way digital radios are scalable over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, support data transfer along with voice, consume less power, work for longer ranges with excellent voice quality reducing external background sounds in noisy environments, and offer software applications that provide location based tracking and services. Using IP technology, multiple locations can be connected together over the Internet using Motorola’s IP Site Connect meaning distant locations, even across countries, can be connected as one site.

Enterprise Mobility:

In addition to other launches, 2010 also saw the launch of the MC65 and MC3190. The MC65, one of the industry’s toughest, most flexible enterprise mobile computers, is Motorola’s newest and most rugged enterprise mobile computer empowers enterprise task workers in tough, scan-intensive environments to get their jobs done right at the point of activity with instant access to business-critical applications and information. The MC3190-Z, the smallest and lightest business-class Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) handheld available on the market, combines exceptional read performance with simple usability in an ergonomic package appropriate for retail and carpeted space environments. Users will benefit from its rugged, yet lightweight design which reduces operator fatigue over long periods of use.
