Acer Group helped Scuderia Ferrari to design a solution to update its data center by offering the latest highly reliable and powerful technology solutions that allowed the renowned Maranello team to achieve its goals.
It is not difficult to imagine the extreme conditions for the cars, drivers, mechanics and technicians during a Formula 1 Grand Prix. In an environment where milliseconds count, different factors make the difference and IT is one of these. High-level infrastructure, capacity, data analysy process, power computing and high speed are not only important but foundamental in motorsport.
For this reason, Scuderia Ferrari launched an innovative project in order to adequately equip its data center and successfully face the High Performance Computing application requirements.
Following an in depth analysis of the solutions available on the market, the project managers identified in Acer Group the best technological partner for the implementation of an High Performance Computing system in order to better support the design of the vehicles, in compliance of the tight constraints of Formula 1 rules.
High Performance Computing systems are in fact an ideal tool to effectively address the design issues. Thanks to HPC solutions it is possible to simulate the F1 car’s behavior under the most extreme weather conditions. Basing on this result, if needed, is possible to make the necessary changes on the design before hitting the track.
Gateway, the Acer Group brand dedicated to professional market in Europe, provided all its experience along with the technicians and researchers of its HPC Competence Center at the University of Pisa, to supply Ferrari with reliable latest technology systems.
The implemented solution includes several hundred multi node Gateway GW2000ht servers seamlessly integrated with the high-performance Gateway Systems storage systems and a new generation interconnecting network with 80Gb/s InfiniBand technology.
The result is a next generation data center, dynamic, powerful, flexible, reliable and energy efficient.
We are proud to have participated in this project with such important Partner," said Gianluca Degliesposti, Vice President Global Business Development Server Acer Group. "Our comprehensive portfolio of High Performance Computing solutions has been an important base for a long and intensive cooperation that generated the right solution to meet the Ferrari needs.
Reliability and extreme performance are the feature we need in a server," said Dario Castello, Head of Information Systems Ferrari. "The flexibility needed by research and development, together with the stability of a mission critical system, create a combination that it very difficult to find on the market. This is what we seek in our partners and is what we have achieved by designing, developing and activating this solution together with Gateway."
