Microsoft has announced that it will release a non-commercial software development kit (SDK) for the Kinect in the spring, enabling Jordanian developers to create new uses for the motion based system beyond gaming. Microsoft will deliver a commercial version of the SDK at a later date.
“The release of the SDK reflects Microsoft’s desire to unleash the endless possibilities of the natural user interface (NUI) technology to a broader set of academic researchers and enthusiasts by empowering them with the tools to create exciting applications with the use of Kinect technology,” stated Mohammad Arrabi, Developer Platform Evangelist at Microsoft Jordan.
Arrabi added, “The SDK will give academic researchers and enthusiasts access to the core Kinect system information such as the audio technology, system application programming interfaces and direct control of the Kinect sensor itself, in the belief that the resulting creativity and invention will lead to new innovative possibilities for computing.”
This release will leverage Microsoft Research’s deep connections to academia worldwide and its long history of releasing software tools to the research community to foster creativity, experimentation, and new research directions.
Monir Abu Hilal, Co-Founder, UX Specialist, ArabDynamics, stated, “Kinect powered windows applications will change the consumer behavior; for example product catalogs and showrooms no longer need to be tangible; the person using a Kinect powered app would interact and go through items virtually, as the machine uses the human body as a controller, that's integrated and interactive with the application.”
Microsoft has made deep investments in the research and development of natural user interfaces, which is part of the company’s long term vision of creating computers that are intuitive. The fruits of those investments manifest across many of Microsoft’s products, including Kinect for Xbox 360, Windows Phone 7, Microsoft Surface 2.0, Bing for Mobile and Office 2010 Mini Translator.
