du Contributes To Energy Sustainability Through Participation In Earth Hour

Published Mar 27, 2011

Supporting the global consciousness drive for the preservation and responsible consumption of our natural resources, du – as a part of its CSR efforts participated in Earth Hour 2011 for the third consecutive year. Showing solidarity to the global event, electricity in du’s facilities in Dubai Outsource Zone, Dubai Academic City 8 & 9, Al Salam and Lotus switched off between 8.30pm-9.30pm.

Speaking on the occasion, Hala Badri, EVP Brand and Communications at du, said: “We live in a globalised community, and our every action invariably has a far reaching impact on the lives of people and the environment. Keeping with this belief, as a part of our corporate responsibility philosophy we constantly strive to contribute to not only to quality of life of the community at large – but also play a pivotal role in creating a safe, secure and responsible environment in which we live.”

In a bid to support Earth Hour 2011, du undertook a campaign to encourage participation in this event through a text based campaign and raise awareness for the cause on its social network profile’s – starting March 21st. du’s employees have also been urged to show their support to this day by switching off lights.

“With the global and the region’s energy needs growing at alarming propositions; every little bit we can do to educate the UAE on responsible energy consumption, goes a long way. What better way is there to teach than to lead by example.”

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later, Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries/territories participating. Regional landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa and the Emirates Palace Hotel as well as global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.
