R&M Extends its Operations in the Domain of Airport Networks

Published Feb 20, 2009
High-performance data cabling is rapidly gaining importance in airports. Swiss network specialist Reichle & De-Massari (R&M) is benefiting from the rising demand in this sector and has completed a number of important projects over the past few months, including installations at the airports in Paris, Geneva, Basel, Nuremberg and Incheon (Korea).

Faced with the challenges of a constant increase in air traffic and a greater need of security, airport operators must be able to rely on an impeccable IT infrastructure. Networks are thus expected to be high-performing, secure, stable and dependable. From an investment point of view, the deciding factors are: uncomplicated maintenance and ample power reserve, as well as extendibility to cater for future requirements. The Product Development Department at the internationally active Swiss company R&M has been monitoring all these factors for years. As a result, R&M has gained a reputation as a manufacturer of first-class network components – particularly amongst customers with very high quality requirements, such as the aforementioned airports in Paris, Geneva, Basel, Nuremberg, Incheon (Korea) and Sudan. This, in turn, has given R&M a decisive competitive edge. On-site installation is always carried out by certified R&M partners and the customers benefit from R&M’s 20-year warranty.

> A new boarding satellite for the Airbus A380

“Galerie Parisienne” is the name of the new boarding satellite at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport. It was specially designed for the Airbus A380. With a length of 750 meters and a usable area of over 2 million square meters, the “Galerie Parisienne” is the only place in Europe with sufficient capacity to handle over 8.5 million passengers a year. The customer chose the shielded Cat. 6 solution from R&M because this product was best able to satisfy the requirements of high performance and operating security. The uncomplicated installation and maintenance were likewise appreciated by the customer.

> Shielded cabling for higher security

The importance of Geneva Airport is underlined by the fact that it handles over 10 million passengers, 160,000 flights and a freight volume of nearly 60,000 tons every year. In order to meet increasing requirements, a new computer center was commissioned in 2007, for which R&M supplied the structured cabling, complete with all components. The external electromagnetic influences and other interference encountered at Geneva Airport placed very high demands on the network. The shielded cabling prevented a negative impact on the reliability of data transfer.

> A variety of connections over great distances

The EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg has invested 230 million Euros in a comprehensive extension project. The corresponding adjustments posed a considerable challenge to the infrastructure because the existing facilities and multi-use areas of the airport had to be integrated into the new complex while the airport was in full operation. Three telephone network operators, 20 airlines, 18 travel agents and a number of other organizations renting premises over a small area – including banks, shops and car rental companies – needed a wide variety of network connections. The R&M network supports the multiple demands in the main airport building and enables a topology that bridges considerable distances. In this way, even new buildings and hangars located up to two kilometers from the terminal could be integrated into the network.

> An innovation for Nuremberg Airport

Following a stringent selection process, the operators of Nuremberg Airport commissioned R&M to install the network in the new Transfer Control Terminal (TCT). The selection criteria included high security of transfer, top quality material and low fire load. In addition, the outlets for the network cables in certain areas needed to be able to cope with the tough mechanical loads frequently encountered in airports. The plastic outlets available on the market did not offer optimum protection. R&M developed a specially constructed, break-proof, closed aluminium housing for Nuremberg Airport within just two weeks!

> Incheon: network technology in the tunnel

Asia’s biggest airport, Incheon International Airport near Seoul, is considered to be technically the most modern airport in Asia. When planning its extension, great importance was attached to maintaining this lead. One of the biggest challenges to potential suppliers was to lay the new network through the tunnel of an underground shuttle, i.e. in a place where cabling is exposed to dust and humidity. Finally, the choice fell on the R&M cabling system VS Compact, as it is particularly suitable for use in confined spaces and it is known to be easy and practical to install. In addition, R&M offers special products for the protection of cabling against dust and humidity up to protection class IP67.
