LG Vows To Turn Up The Heat In Looming 3D TV Format War

Published Apr 20, 2011

LG Electronics (LG) has announced its intention to take advantage of its technology lead over its closest rivals in 3D technology in an upcoming release of its new CINEMA 3D TV range, a diverse line-up of TVs equipped with LG’s next generation CINEMA 3D TV technology.

LG is looking to take the fight to the market in a looming technology format war around 3D technology and welcomed comments from director James Cameron, as he spoke of his preference for polarized glasses because they would “accelerate adoption of 3D into the home.” Mr. Cameron, speaking last week at the 2011 National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, USA, is the mastermind behind Avatar, the 3D movie that earned nearly USD 3 billion worldwide to become the highest grossing movie of all time.

In reference to the benefit of LG’s CINEMA 3D TV technology that relies on polarized glasses, Mr. H.S. Paik, President of LG Electronics Gulf FZE said, "Right now there’s a battle growing between the producers of 3D display technologies that rely on expensive active shutter-glass displays against those that offer Film Patterned Retarder, or FPR, screens. LG’s consumers are looking for the most comfortable, enjoyable and social experience when watching 3D content in their homes. LG's CINEMA 3D TV is free from the problems associated with competing devices as LG’s technology relies on polarized film attached to the screen instead of bulky and expensive glasses that need to be recharged between uses. LG’s CINEMA 3D TV technology is not only more com-fortable and convenient for consumers, but the displayed image is brighter, clearer, Flicker-Free with less Crosstalk.”

The next generation of 3D TVs powered by LG’s CINEMA 3D TV technology is set to make its debut in the UAE in mid-May, 2011.
