Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories And Alcatel-Lucent Empower Taiwan To Enter The Global 4G LTE Market

Published Apr 21, 2011

Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories (Chunghwa Telecom Lab) and Alcatel-Lucent demonstrated outstanding results today from LTE field trial enabled by Alcatel-Lucent’s end-to-end 4G LTE solution. The trial results include indoor demonstrations of applications and services on a wide variety of 4G LTE devices from various Taiwanese terminal manufacturers and outdoor mobility tests on a high-speed train. In addition, Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories and Alcatel-Lucent both showcased drive demonstrations of some exciting in-car services enabled by LTE mobile technology in LTE Connected Cars.

The trial supports Chunghwa Telecom Labs’ efforts on Taiwan Networked Communications Program (NCP) and demonstrates Taiwan’s information and communication technology (ICT) leadership position in the global 4G LTE ecosystem. It also helps Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories assess new business opportunities created by bringing enhanced added-value applications and high quality mobile broadband experiences to its Taiwanese subscribers.

The LTE network was implemented by Alcatel-Lucent from October 2010. Over the past six months, Alcatel-Lucent and Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories have carried out an extremely comprehensive and intensive field trial in both 2.6GHz and 700MHz frequency bands. The LTE trial focused on testing the radio frequency (RF) network performance in terms of coverage and penetration, especially high-speed IP-based data transmission using MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology, mobility on hi-speed train and quality of service. The tests performed on the high-speed train achieved record speeds in FTP data transmission of 90Mbps in downlink and 34.2Mbps in uplink while the train was running at 281 Km/h with smooth handovers between the base stations. In addition, the trial demonstrated low control plan latency with less than 115ms and superior FTP data transmission performance in fixed environment with maximum transmission capacity of 120Mbps in downlink and 40Mbps in uplink for each sector of LTE Remote Radio Head (RRH).

During the project period, Alcatel-Lucent conducted extensive interoperability testing with five local device manufacturers (HTC, Quanta, BandRich, Zyxel/MitraStar, WNC/Wistron) using ten different types of devices in various form factors; Smartphone, USB dongle, Indoor and Outdoor router and tablet PC with the aim to understand their readiness in LTE product development.

“Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories is driving telecommunications development in Taiwan with continuous innovations. Our cooperation with Alcatel-Lucent on the LTE trial has demonstrated the superior performance of LTE technology and of Alcatel-Lucent’s LTE network with successful interoperability testing with several local device manufacturers as well as applications innovation based on the ng Connect LTE Connected Car. We are confident that our fruitful collaboration will contribute to boost the development of LTE in Taiwan and globally, and unleash its full business potential,” commented Dr. Yuan-Kuang Tu, president of Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories.

“We are proud to cooperate with Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories for Taiwan’s first LTE field trial in support of the country’s telecommunications development program” addedRajeev Singh-Molares, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in the Asia Pacific region. “Taiwan has the largest share of manufacturing capacities worldwide. By working closely with Taiwanese device manufacturers, Alcatel-Lucent and Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories are jointly accelerating the LTE ecosystem and empowering Taiwan to the global 4G LTE market.”

To demonstrate and advance the capabilities of next generation mobile networks, Alcatel-Lucent also supports service providers to build up and mature the ecosystem around LTE through the ng Connect Program. It brings together multi-industry players to develop innovative applications and generate new business models enabled by LTE. The LTE Connected Car concept vehicle is one of its most notable examples showcasing how LTE technology can support a new class of vehicle-centric and travel-centric applications and services. More applications and business models are developed from within the ng Connect Program and will benefit service providers.

Alcatel-Lucent has been a long-standing partner of Chunghwa Telecom having already provided next-generation optical networks, Taiwan’s first Femtocell network, Ethernet/MPLS solutions for its fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) initiative, and its NGN and IPTV initiative.

With thirteen LTE contracts for commercial deployments including two of the largest LTE network roll-outs, and engagement in more than 60 trials worldwide, Alcatel-Lucent has established a strong leadership position in LTE.
