Canon Underlines Support To Photo Journalism In Region Through World Press Photo Exhibition In Lebanon

Published May 12, 2011

In line with its support to photo journalism in the region, Canon Middle East, leader in imaging solutions, has announced its sponsorship of the Lebanon leg of the World Press Photo Exhibition that starts at Beirut Souks, Beirut City Center. The event is under the Patronage of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, organized by the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design at Notre Dame University, and held in collaboration with Solidere.

Canon also announced two activities to be held in line with the World Press Photo Exhibition, including "Click and Print" wherein photographers from Canon will be taking photos of the exhibition attendees, who will then be given free print copies of their pictures. Canon will also conduct a free "Check and Clean" service for owners of Canon EOS DSLR cameras to be held from May 12 to 25, 2011, at the ADI offices, Mkalles, Diab building.

The annual exhibition, organised by World Press Photo, an independent, non-profit organisation headquartered in the Netherlands, is regarded as the world's largest and most prestigious press photography contest. Prize-winning photographs are assembled into a traveling exhibition that is visited by over two million people in around 45 countries worldwide.

“Photo journalists often do not get the recognition they deserve for the thankless and courageous work they do. Year after year, the World Press Photo Exhibition has been showcasing some of the best works of press photographers from around the world, highlighting their creativity, perseverance and commitment. Canon Middle East considers it an honour to be associated with this prestigious exhibition and we believe that through our sponsorship we can make a small contribution in further stimulating the work of press photographers worldwide,” said Mai Youssef, Corporate Communications Manager at Canon Middle East.

Every year, the World Press Photo Exhibition is officially opened in Amsterdam before it is held in approximately 100 cities in 45 countries. A yearbook presenting all prize-winning entries is published annually in six languages. Further, given the wide-ranging focus of the contest, it forms an eyewitness record of world events from the previous year.
