Etisalat Highlights Leading Initiatives In The Cloud Computing Domain At The 3rd International Cloud Computing Summit

Published May 17, 2011

Addressing a power packed audience at the Strategic Keynote session, on the opening day of the 3rd International Cloud Computing Summit, Mr. Abdulla Hashim, Senior Vice President, ICT, at Etisalat, highlighted key strategies for organizations to leverage cloud computing – the next wave of transformational technology for individuals, companies and governments.

In his presentation titled – ‘Making Cloud Computing Possible – Enabling Technologies’, Mr. Hashim highlighted the emerging need for organizations to harness cloud computing and explained the benefits associated with this technology.

“The Cloud will invade your plans. Organizations should be ready to ride the storm.” said Mr. Hashim in his keynote address. “Cloud Computing is a transformational phenomenon that will change the way ICT services are provisioned and consumed by businesses. The Etisalat Cloud offerings, when launched will allow businesses to access a diverse array of applications and extend their IT capabilities with minimal capital cost, with significant enhancements to their flexibility and speed. This is also part of Etisalat‘s strategic initiatives to introduce a range of innovative services which will position UAE as one of the most advanced nations in terms of Telecom and ICT services,” added Mr. Hashim.

Cloud Computing is recognized to be one of the most transformational trends worldwide and Etisalat is leading this trend in the UAE, with many innovative applications planned to be launched on the Cloud Computing platform. The abundant supply of information technology capabilities, will lower customers costs, while offering many enticing opportunities for organizations.

During his session, Mr. Hashim demystified the Cloud Computing concept, by explaining the key elements of Cloud Computing – Software as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service and Platform as a Service, and various Cloud Computing Models – be it Public, Private or Hybrid Cloud. Mr. Hashim also highlighted a number of tangible solutions, planned to be offered by Etisalat on the cloud computing platform, enabling organizations to actually experience the cloud to create substantial business value.

“Cloud computing has tremendous potential to benefit businesses, industries, and entire economies. Etisalat has taken the first step towards understanding and sharing knowledge about this transformational trend and investing time, energy and resources to ride on the trend,” said Mr. Hashim.

The Cloud, in essence, encompasses service-centric solutions that provide a cost effective, on-demand network access and computing power. Being from a highly aggregated but shared pool of computing resources, (networks, servers, storage, applications and services), these solutions can be provisioned in less time and withdrawn with minimal administrative and management effort, providing maximum flexibility to businesses, without additional infrastructure expenses.

Hence businesses utilizing Cloud Computing can benefit from zero up-front initial investments, paying only for services used. Cloud based services can provide reduced costs, greater resource efficiency, enhanced flexibility with Pay-as-you-go model, and quick adaptations with simplified change management cycles, higher quality of service, increased reliability (24/7 availability) and technology refresh.

During MECOM 2011, Etisalat is presenting all the three types of clouds i.e. Private Clouds, Hybrid Clouds and Public Clouds. Etisalat will also showcase how enterprises can leverage the Public Cloud and benefit from Etisalat’s Online SaaS Store hosted on Etisalat’s Public Cloud, thereby converting their Private Clouds into Hybrid Clouds, with the highest required level of security built into them. Specifically, services showcased include managed unified communications, security centric applications, cloud based information sharing, and online backup service.
