The ICT Association of Jordan - int@j and the Jordanian Ministry of Information and Communications Technology announced the IT and IT Enabled Services (ITES) industry statistics for the year 2010.
H.E. Atef Tall, Minister of ICT indicated that private sector cooperation in responding to the ICT and ITES industry classification and statistics survey annually is key to highlight the partnership between public and private sector with ICT contributing approximately 14% to the GDP.
Chairman of int@j, Mr. Mohammad Tahboub, indicated that int@j is working closely with the Ministry of ICT in conducting the ICT and ITES industry classification and statistics annually based on UN and OECD definition of the ICT and ITES sector and classification based on ISIC 4.0 to capture the true size and players in the sector in order to reflect the high value the sector brings to the country.
The survey for 2010 was conducted jointly by int@j and MoICT, and was launched in Jan 2011 and completed in May 2011, and it was based on the International Standard Industrial Classification, ISIC version 4.0 and focused on ICT and IT Enabled Services (ITES) activities according to ISIC definition, hence the 2010 survey targeted the whole ICT and ITES Sector in Jordan. The survey was designed and conducted electronically through a web enabled solution to provide information on IT and ITES revenue (domestic and export), IT and ITES export markets, IT and ITES employment, and IT and ITES investments.
The 2010 ICT and ITES Industry statistics survey targeted approximately 570 companies, of which 93 companies where filtered out as non-ICT and ITES companies or suspended business in the sector, in addition to 21 companies declared themselves as non-ICT and ITES companies, resulting in 456 companies who are part of the ICT and ITES sector responded fully to the electronic survey.
The 2010 survey results indicated total IT revenue of $731,847,291 including $529,571,537 as domestic revenue and $$202,275,754 as exports. Though the IT Sector witnessed a decline of approximately 15% in 2010 over 2009 numbers, the sector has been showing an average growth rate of 7% over the past 5 year, and the sector managed to keep 2010 exports close to 2009 numbers which indicates local companies strength in export markets despite the overall global economic downturn. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) increased by $15m in 2010 and cumulative FDI reached $142,530,884, whereas employment in IT and ITES was approximately 10,000 direct employees.
Furthermore, top 10 ICT and ITES export countries are Saudi Arabia (34%), Iraq (13%), United Arab Emirates (13%), United States of America (7%), Oman (5%), Palestine (4%), Egypt (4%), Netherlands (3%), Qatar (2%), and Sudan (2%), the rest of exports distributed on 34 regional and international countries. The numbers indicate an increasing demand for Jordanian companies in the GCC markets especially Saudi Arabia, while exports to USA declined due to the global economic downturn.
According to the survey, IT sector reflects approximately 55% value added services in domestic revenue and approximately 90% value added services in exports, demonstrating that the IT industry brings high value to the Jordanian economy especially in exports.
In addition, according to Arab Advisors Group, Telecommunications Sector revenue for 2010 reached $1.186bn, accordingly the total Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Sector revenue for 2010 was almost $2bn.
