Published Jun 28, 2011

As part of its initiative to further enhance the career prospects of UAE Nationals, du today celebrated the graduation of 120 students from the first season of its one-of-a-kind Life Skills program at their Al Salam Tower premises.

The Life Skills program is part of du’s Corporate Social Responsibility, with the participating academic organizations being asked to nominate students enrolled in the graduating year at their institution to take part in the course. There is no obligation for the students to join or apply to work at du on completion, as the aim of the Life Skills program is to play a part in nurturing essential career skills in young UAE Nationals, allowing them to better present themselves as competent professionals and thereby giving them the best start possible in their careers.

Present at the event was du’s Chief Human Resources and Shared Services Officer, Fahad Al Hassawi, along with Yaser Obaid, VP Human Resources, du and Jamal Khalifa Lootah, Senior Director National Recruitment & Development, du who handed certificates to the graduating students and felicitated the academic and training partners who made the program possible.

Accepting awards on behalf of their academic institutions were Dr. Peter Heath, Chancellor, American University of Sharjah; Dr. Ali Dawood, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR) Assistant Director – Sharjah Campus; Ahmed Sharif, Dubai Men’s College Chair-Corporate/Public Relations and Student Development; Professor Renee Everett, Associate Dean, Zayed University and Rabia Bekhazi, Dubai Women’s College.

Commenting on the graduation, Mr. Al Hassawi said, “We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to the students who have successfully completed our inaugural Life Skills program, and offer our thanks to the education partners who worked with us to bring this series of courses into being. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, this Life Skills program has given today’s graduates essential skills to help them with finding, retaining, and making a difference at their first job. This program is a reflection of our commitment towards developing our Emirati youth, in whom we have great hopes and aspirations.”

The goals of this program are to develop awareness of business aims and expectations, to make students prepared for conversations with business and human resource managers, to help them become knowledgeable about what is required for getting their first job. With these intentions in mind, du conducted the training programs on their premises at Al Salam Tower, Dubai Internet City, on Saturdays throughout the months of April, May and June, prior to the participating students’ graduation dates from university.

A total of 12 courses were presented as part of the Life Skills program, focusing on a variety of topics including Interpersonal Skills, Preparation as a Job Seeker, Think on Your Feet, Power Reading Skills, Business Writing for Professionals, Business Etiquette, Problem Solving and Decision Making, Interview Techniques, Settling into a Job, Effective Team Working, Communication at the Workplace and Succeeding at Job Search and Job Interviewing. Through their choice of four of the above-mentioned courses, students were able to graduate with a crucial set of skills to aid them in their careers.

du’s efforts to improve upon Emiratisation levels within their organization have been notable, especially through their Masar graduate training program which aims to equip young nationals with the skill-sets they will require for a career with du, and through the opening of a 100% Emirati-run call center in Fujairah.

The ceremony was attended by du’s academic and training partners, including ABAMI Consultancy and Training, Executive Skills Training, International House Dubai and PROTRAINING.
