Thuraya Brings Satellite Communications Indoors

Published Jul 6, 2011

Thuraya, the leading international mobile satellite services operator, unveiled a specialised suite of solutions aimed at offering all the functionality of satellite communication, indoors. Banishing the myth that satellite communications are an outdoor offering, Thuraya’s range of products is specifically designed for indoor use.

Compatible with Thuraya XT, the world’s toughest satellite handheld, the portfolio includes a Fixed Docking Unit (FDU), Fixed Phone and Indoor Repeaters. Built in consideration of Thuraya’s key market segments: government, oil and gas, mining, construction, NGOs and maritime, the holistic offerings allow instant set-up of remote offices in areas where there is little or no terrestrial coverage.

Easily deployable, Thuraya’s indoor solutions provide ideal communications hubs, making them the product of choice across a range of markets. From field operations to fixed on-site offices, remote broadcasting or simply staying in touch with friends and family for those living in remote locations, Thuraya’s solutions make communication, in every form possible.

The FDU is a docking adaptor designed for use with Thuraya XT, enabling crystal-clear clarity and instant communication indoors. The FDU supports high-quality voice transmission via an auxiliary handset, speakerphone or an extension telephone. Other functionality includes high-speed data services and fax transmission.

Thuraya’s Fixed Phone is an easy-to-install desktop solution that offers, voice, SMS and data services in a single, compact unit. With both an outdoor satellite and GPS antenna with 10 metre cables, the unit is the ideal solution for remote offices, factories, oil platforms, mining and construction sites, emergency field offices, boats or ships. It also offers a reliable and easy-to-use back-up to primary communications. The data services offered by the Thuraya Fixed Phone reach speeds up to 60 Kbps allowing instant access to web services and emails.

Adding a further edge to Thuraya’s indoor offering are the Indoor Repeaters. A compact, cost-effective solution that provides blanket network coverage indoors, the Indoor Repeaters can be used in buildings, tunnels or outdoor shadow zones with limited or no satellite signal. Consumers can choose from a Single-Channel Repeater capable of handling one call/session at a time or a Multi-Channel Repeater enabling accessibility for up to 10 users simultaneously.

“Thuraya’s latest offerings introduce the market-leading functionality and communications expertise for which Thuraya has become known, into a fixed environment, further extending our capabilities and enhancing the solutions available to our consumers. Supported by high-performance antennas to ensure constant connectivity to our robust network, Thuraya’s Indoor Solutions raise the bar in the satcom industry,” said Thuraya’s Director of Product Management, Mr. Rashid Baba.

Thuraya XT is the only satellite handheld to be IP54/IK03 certified making it splash water, dust and shock proof. It has unique walk and talk capabilities due to the advanced antenna design and integration with Thuraya’s powerful satellites. It is also the only satellite handheld to provide GPS waypoint navigation.
